Anyone uses a Zeiss scope with the Rapid-Z Varmint reticle?

I'm thinking of getting a Conquest to top up my .22-250 and would like to hear from actual users. After entering my loads data into the ballistic calculator and optimizing the power setting, it gives me values which place bar #3 of the reticle at 301 yards.

Most of my shots are from 50 to 350 yards with the odd shot at 400 yards on a nice day with no wind.

I'm just wondering if this reticle would be a good choice for coyote hunting in SE Ontario.

Comments, complaints, pros and cons are appreciated.

Thanks

The rapid-z varmint is the correct reticle choice for a 22-250 - it is designed for fast, light grain bullets. The output you received is correct: bar #3 would be right for 300 yards. How did the rest of the bars correspond to the ranges (4 = 400, 5 = 500, etc...)?

For hunting coyotes, you are generally better off with a properly selected hold-over reticle, as opposed to relying on turret adjustments. Quite simply, with a reticle, you can make and adjust your holdover and windage adjustments without removing your eye from the target. With turrets, this is not as convenient. If the coyotes in your area like to stand still for extended periods of time (i.e. over bait), turrets would offer more refinement.

The negatives of a hold-over reticle must be considered of course: some find them to be cluttered, in the heat of the moment there can be confusion over which bar to choose, and you must be using the proper magnification for the hold-over values to be valid (for second focal plane reticles). However once one becomes comfortable with them, taking shots at varmints on the run becomes more controlled and less of a Hail Mary affair.

I use a rapid-z 1000 reticle with one of my 308's (which I use for wolves and coyotes) and I find my response time is much quicker than with turrets - I still love turrets though.

Bear in mind, however, that at the shorter ranges, the 22-250 is relatively flat: a 40gr Winchest silvertip with a 200 yard zero only drops 4 inches at 300 and 8 inches at 350, so if you've been successful thusfar and unless you a) want to stretch out to further distances, b) want to increase your level of accuracy, and/or c) want to try something new, the increased cost in moving from a plex to a rapid-z is something to consider.

Thanks Plainsight, PM sent.

Do you have the Conquest 6.5-20x50mm AO MC with Rapid-Z Varmint reticle in stock?
