zeiss terra, good, bad, meh.. for that price range?

I'm interested as well as I just had a dealer strongly recommend one to me. They're still relatively new and it seems like they have mixed reviews on most websites. I do know the glass is not made in the same place as their higher end stuff.

I missed the fire sale when they discontinued the old Conquest, which was replaced by Terra and the new Conquest line moved up to 800-$1000 range. I have waited for reviews on this scope but unfortunately, there seem to be more negative than positive (for that price range of course). It now keeps appearing on discount left and right. Not a good indication. Who knew a cost cutting replacement for a good but expensive to produce product could mean lesser quality! I am shocked! ;)

The Terra did not replace the Conquest, it's an entirely new line. The Conquest line did receive an upgrade with the addition of HD glass and 5x zoom on most models. Overall, with a few exceptions, the new Conquest HD5s are the same price or cheaper than the models they replaced but with the blowout prices on the old Conquests, people just got used to paying very low prices for them.

So, have you had a chance to try Terra?

For the limited amount I've used it, I'd say in its price range it compares well. It's definitely not Conquest quality though.

Agreed, bought one that was on clearance ... unfortunately it arrived with a fleck of something inside...they replaced it with a Terra instead of fixing. It doesn't come across as quality as the old conquest, the difference in brightness and clarity is noticeable imo.

I'm impressed enough with mine. I just got a 3-9x42 with the Z-Plex reticle and finished sighting it in for my 30-30. The glass is clear and the turret adjustments are crisp and easy to feel, the only down side to the reticle compared to my Vortex PST is the lack of an illuminated dial for use on black targets. That said, I much prefer the glass on the Zeiss.

I donno sheephunter, I bought my old conquest before the blowout. Hell, I think it was $499. It is the 3-9x 40mm. I'd still buy it for that. That was a Canadian price. Price for the HD5 2-10x 42mm is 2x that price at Grouseriver. Same at cabelas.ca although there is a $100 rebate on. 2x is quite the price increase.

I'm sure the quality is better but the old Conquest was a top notch scope on a basic hunting rifle for 1/2 the price. Don't see anything like that on the market (is there?). I'm told the Meopta's are the closest to it in value and performance.

The Terra line replaces the base Conquest 3-9x40 Z-plex. The difference being that they're made with Asian parts rather than Czech as with the old Conquest.

There was always a big jump in price to the next in line Conquest model, even a different reticle was double the price. At one time, the 3-9x40's were $399. Go to a 3.5-10x44 with Rapid Z and the price was closer to $1000.

I was just looking at the 2-7, what do you have yours mounted on?

Its on my ISSC MK22. I bought it to eventually put on a non restricted ACR, which will probably not happen for a couple years now :( The scope is great for that rifle as I dont shoot with it beyond 50 years, usually I have it set for 25 yards.

Just put a 3x9 terra on my hunting rifle to replace yet another finicky leupy...

Glass is clear, clicks are crisp, I can make out 7mm holes in my target at 100M with it no problem
Only regret is not picking up a conquest 3x9 while they were on clearance.

I sold a conquest and bought the 4x12x42 terra with the z800 reticle. I was disappointed. I had several rifles out the first day I used it. It adjusted perfectly while sighting in. I was letting my 257 weebee cool down and grabbed my 17hmr with a browning 5x15 on it. I looked at the same target and WOW. I could see the target considerably clearer with the bushnel made browning than with zeiss. I looked through a lupy 2.5x8 as well and although it was clearer than the zeiss, the browning had them both beat. I sold my terra and bought another conquest.
