Zeroing an S&B Short Dot

I recently acquired an S&B 1.1-4 Short Dot that unfortunately lacked the instruction manual, and S&B doesn't have one for this model online. The 1-8 model adjusts differently and the instructions don't apply. Google was not helpful either.

From what I've gathered by tinkering there are four pieces to the turret - the cap and spring, the turret, and an inner ring. Taking all of them off allows access to the internal adjustment knob. I was able to boresight it at the shop and adjust to within 1-2 MOA but it's not zeroed; a little adjustment in the field was still necessary.

Is this the correct procedure? I would be awful nervous about losing any of those parts at the range while making adjustments so if there's a better method I'm all ears. I also hope S&B sells replacement caps for this model still cause a flat blade screwdriver slips out with reasonable ease and mars the slot...

I phoned S&B and they were kind enough to provide me with instructions. Here they are in case anyone else has the same question.

Instructions for the Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4x20 CQB SHORT DOT with “Locking Turrets.”

This 1.1-4x20 CQB has been outfitted with "Locking Turrets" (LT) for the elevation and windage controls. Some models are equipped with a "Locking Turret" (LT) on the Illumination control. Both the elevation and windage are in 1/2 MOA click values. Presently the Bullet Drop Compensators (BDC) are calibrated for only two cartridges the 5.56 / .223 in the M855 and 75 grain TAP and the 7.62 / .308 load M118LR.

Each scope will come with the elevation BDC set on @ 13 MOA. In this setting the reticle is centered in its adjustment range and will provide the shooter with an equal amount of available reticle travel for collimating or for sighting in. Once the scope is mounted the turrets are adjusted in the following manner:

Elevation control: To RAISE the point of impact first LIFT UP on the BDC ring and turn the tower counterclockwise to a higher number. To LOWER the point of impact first LIFT UP on the BDC ring and turn the tower clockwise to a lower number. The BDC ring should return to its locked position when released.

Windage control: To make windage adjustments first PULL OUT on the windage ring and turn the tower back or counterclockwise to move the point of impact to the RIGHT and forward or clockwise to move the point of impact to the LEFT.

Once the weapon has been sighted in the elevation and windage BDC rings can be re-indexed to "0" or "1" for a 100 meter setting by following these steps:

1) With a coin or tool unscrew the slotted center cap at the top of the turret tower. (CAUTION: It is very important not to lose the cap or the tension spring found directly beneath the slotted cap)

2) Remove the slotted cap and spring.

3) Lift up on the BDC ring* and rotate in the direction needed to re-index.

4) Push down on the BDC ring to properly seat the ring. Replace the slotted cap and spring and screw into place.

Note: The New Locking BDC ring is actually a two piece unit. The outer graduated BDC ring has five (5) indexing pins found on the inside of the BDC ring itself. The lower serrated ring has five (5) index holes found on its top surface. The lower serrated ring and the outer BDC ring need to remain together as one unit when re-indexing the turret.

Illumination control: In order to select a light intensity you must PULL OUT on the illumination control turret and rotate it to the desired setting and release. The turret will return to its locked position when released. The illumination control has 11 light intensity settings. 1-3 are for use with night vision equipment. 4-6 and for "low light naked eye" use and settings 7-11 for daytime use. To increase the intensity level turn the illumination knob forward / counterclockwise. Please note that there are detents between the numbers and that the illumination will shut off in these positions. The illumination control also features a 6 hour timer and will shut down if not in use saving battery life. To replace the CR2032 3V battery simply hold the illumination knob firmly while turning the coin slotted battery cap off counterclockwise. Once the new battery has been installed replace the battery cap.

Fast eye focus: To adjust the diopter setting or focus simply turn the rubber eye piece to the left all the way until it stops. Then while looking at a bright 100 yard target rotate the eye piece to the right until the image and crosshair are in focus.
