Perhaps, but it WAS a 480 gr. bullet. I seem to recall reading somewhere that that the venerable .45 Colt (aka "Long Colt") revolver cartridge (250 gr. bullet @ 930 fps.) was accepted for military use because it met the required standard of being able to "shoot through at horse at 100 yards". A 480 gn. bullet, even if it was only doing, say, 900 fps. @ 400 yards, would still have more than enough momentum to knock down a man. The ladder sights would have made a hit at that range a possibility, if not a certainty.
