wheel weights

I separate the stick on weights and throw the rest in the pot. Scoop out the ones that don't melt. Keep your pot temp in the 600-650F range and you won't have any problems.
 
Anyone living around Saskatoon can contact dieguy59. He usually has some ww lead and soft lead for sale at good prices. It's already melted and made into ingots.
 
Don't worry about the steel.It will float an top of the melt. The real concern is Zinc. It will destroy your melt and efforts real fast.

I've been casting for over 15 years and have never had a problem with zinc. I think any zinc just floats on top and gets skimmed off with the steel and dirt. Does anybody here know of anyone that has actually had a problem with zinc or am I just lucky?

On cast boolits there are a few posts about it. I think you pretty much have to put the heat on high and forget about it for the pot to get hot enough to melt the zinc.
 
I throw everything into the pot and scrape off what floats. Then I cast RB. I only cast minie balls from pure soft lead which isn't easy to come by. For me an electric melting pot is the way to go. 700W melts it very fast and you can control the heat. With minies the heat is always high but RB I turn it down.
