Hi all, just secured a series 183 mini in excellent condition. We don't see them new or rarely used in my area, so I grabbed it. Anyway I was thinking of putting a scope on it without drilling and taping the gun. I have seen on this site there are side mount bases, or there are bases that can be installed in place of the rear site. Just wondering what experience, and tips anyone could give me about this topic. Also would like to know where bases are sold in Canada.

The mini 14 comes with Ruger specific cut outs for rings. Any of the major suppliers can get them for you. I have 1" and 30mm for mine. They are actually really good for removing your scope and re mounting it without having to re sight in the scope. If you really want a rail you can buy one that fits and uses standard rings.
 
The Mini 14 does not come with Ruger specific cut out for rings. The Mini 14 Ranch Rifle comes with the ability to fix Ruger rings, not the Mini 14. Your 183 series mini will need either a side mount that is easily available or you will need an Ultimak rail, etc.
