Hi All,

I'd like to teach my wife and daughter how to shoot and I thought the .22 is a great way to get acclimated. Just wondering what rifle you would recommend that is a great value, good for a beginner and accurate.

Yes savage is great for your 7yo. However not so much for the wife.
If I was in your shoes Id look at cost and long term. I suggest a 10/22 and buy the axiom stock.
Its really light 1.2 lbs and is adjustable. Plus you wife may like single shot for awhile but if she gets hooked. A single shot wont last long and shell want a larger mag. I agree bolt action is best to learn on but can be mastered in a short time.
Thus a semi auto IMO is a better option, unless money isnt an issue. As you know the 10/22 is the honda civic of rifles and can grow with both your child and wife. If you are worried about safety, just load only one round in the mag or buy a 1 rounds mag.
Another reason for the 10/22 is the light aftermarket barrels. I have a tactical solutions barrel and its less than a pound and is 16"
Just my thoughts.

If your trading in both your daughter AND your wife I think you should get at least two guns out of it...

I agree on the 10/22...especially since it should be available in Muddy Girl, if they're fond of pink.

shooting semi-auto is just so much fun, they'll have a blast, so definitely worth the premium over the entry level .22LR rifles.

+1 for the Rascal. Also just picked up a Chiappa Little Badger which is a break action and has an adjustable length of pull to fit your wife more comfortably when she shoots.

The little Badger is great, but I wouldn't call it adjustable. I know it is, but it's a real pain to adjust.

Recently bought a second-hand Savage Mark II bolt action with a 5-round magazine and then bought two 10-round magazines for it. My 9 year-old daughter loves it !!

CZ scout by far the best. I would NOT suggest a 10/22 for a 7 year old, having a live rifle the minute the trigger is pulled is just not a safe way to teach kids or anyone who may be nervous around a firearm and is not proficient with muzzle control

The other suggestion I would make is drop a red dot scope on it. To be honest the old way to teach with irons and then with a scope is ok, but they learn much more quickly if you use as scope first to teach them the basics of shooting, let them get comfortable shooting, reloading and worry less about aiming. then once they have the fundamentals of handling the rifle down, and have made several shots, then you can switch to irons. At that point the only thing running through their mind will be lining up the irons as they will have everything else down. It really does speed up the learning process and it makes it more fun for beginners. They like to hit where they are aiming from the first shot on.

Everyone should have at least one nice .22. So looking at the long term, the cz scout is an excellent gun but too heavy for a 7 year old girl, also the LOP is too much as well. It could be a few years till she can shoot it comfortably without a rest. There are worse choices, there are better. Best IMHO is the rascal. Rascal prices are going up a lot lately. If you find some old stock, expect to pay around $170-200. Prices in some stores are now around $100 more.
So, rascal for the 7 year old, a scout for the wife if she is small in stature. Otherwise, a CZ 452 is easier to find and also an excellent gun. At some point the 7 year old will want the scout/CZ, but that's another discussion.

I bought a nice Marlin 915YS single shot for my niece and nephew to learn on. Very well made little rifle. They have now graduated to a 10/22, although they still like to shoot the Marlin.

Auggie D.

I have the CZ scout, rascal and a T/C hotshot. IMO of the 3 the T/C would be the best for lil ones to learn on.

1- great size, not quite as thin in the hand as the rascal.
2- break action with hammer. You can tell from 20 yrd away what condition the gun is in (not that you should be far away but is highly visible)

I can snap a few pics of the trio together if you would like.

Anyone have experience with the Crikett? I'm also looking to make a purchase for future use by my daughter and I really like the look of the kids pink laminate stock over the plasticky pink one on the Rascal.

The Hotshot is discontinued.

Make sure you handle one first. They don't #### with the bolt, you have to manually pull it straight back and it can be heavy for 'lil ones.

Ok and? K98's and SMLE's are D/C'd as well...

They are still around. I have 2....

Was stating as they may be hard to find... I've no idea how long they've been discontinued. Also didn't know that, presumably, you're a dealer. Sorry, the wife's not currently at home so I was giving the mind-reading gear a break.
