Just how good is the 270 WSM

The 270 WSM along with all the 277 cal cartridges are great deer rifles period...........They do NOT compare with 284 or 308 dia bullets and cartridges and should have died and been buried at inception. JMHO
Hater! ....... Don't forget that moose are deer too. :)

Ammo cost? Like honestly if $5 is a deal breaker for you then get a new hobby. Much more expensive items in this hobby.

270wsm is a awesome caliber. Yes it's more noise and recoil then the 270win. I know I have both. It depends on your use. 270 win will kill moose all day enough of the .30 crowd like seriously. What did guys use before? 45-70govt?? 270wsm ill shoot a rhino with. Every caliber no every gun needs shot placement. If you can't do that then not even a 50BMG is good for moose.

I hate this arguement of calibers. It depends on your use. I like the high velocities for flatter trajectories. I own a BLR lever action with a short barrel. It's nice and small for a bush gun. So shorter barrel loses velocity. So having a faster caliber helps make up for my lost velocity. Every caliber from 270 and up will kill any moving creature on earth. Yes rhinos everything. A hole in the brain or heart of any size in any animal kills them immediately. Garbage shooters who make garbage shots are unethical for hunting period. The guy who uses 140 grain .243 but places every shot is far more ethical IMO.

I can buy factory loaded FMJ for $13 a box and factory loaded soft points for $18 for my 308. When I owned my 270WSM I never found a box of ammo under $30, and it usually approached $40. I also never found a box at gun shows that was worth buying. Every gun show I attend I find 308 ammo for at least 25% off retail, if not more. Last show I attended got a box of federal soft points for $11 and Nosler Partitions (Federal loaded) for $20. Wont ever approach those prices with factory loaded 270wsm.

That is a big difference in my wallet.

I prefer to use a cartridge that shoots flatter, and does it with a heavier bullet, and has manageable recoil. I am not aware of anything that a .277" bullet can do, that a .284" bullet at higher velocity, can't do better.:)

Stupplejumper...what does the heavier bullet with the .284" do better ? I thought shot placement was the do all end all in shooting game. Can you explain how the heavier weight and the extra .007" helps with the wound channel , making more dead ? What's manageable recoil ? So if the ."284 is better than the .277" , then it must make sense the .308" is "better" than the .284" ?

Did you manage to check out that reloading website I gave the link to yesterday for velocities on '06 vs 270 WSM or does your school's computer block that website?

is that your answer and intel ? please don't reload any longer . I asked you .277 vs.284 ..you left school early ...

7 mm wsm is the well unknown that should have work like the 325wsm but the hype and marketing didn't help them ...

I even seen in Europe some 270wsm Bar with 51cm barrel ... still lost about those noisy choices ...

In Stubble-Jumper's case the .284 with heavier weight and higher velocity is the 7mm STW. Therefore the answer to what it can do better than the .270 WSM is "Everything". Then it can wander around in .300 Mag country and get in it's face. If there's some extra time the STW will slip into a long barrelled/heavy VLD guise and threaten the .338 Lapua guys and do it without a brake in a rifle that weighs 5 pounds less.

I like the .270 WSM but there's nothing magic about it. So far mine isn't doing anything that a frisky .270 won't do. It isn't even close to threatening my .270 Weatherby. I have all three of them, and probably every other caliber mentioned in this thread.

What Stubblejumper meant, was that bullets matter more than headstamps.... And there are better bullets available in .284", than there are in .277".....
