Can you get a decent rangefinder around 1000$? Anyone knows newcon?

leica is just 1600 vs 2400 yards for the newcon. why go leica? and I've read that the swarovski is better than the leica.

Also, the terrapin is 2500$ CAN. (vs probably 700$ US online for the newcon)
I am not willing to spend 2500$ + tax on a range finder for occasional use. I have too many things I want and I need to choose somewhere.

The price was what made me choose the Newcon. Same sort of logic. I only get out so often and shoot at unknown distances. The glass quality allows me to see a shape at 1500m and that is really all I need. The swaro or leica might be clearer, but the Newcon is doing the job at 1500m which was all I needed it to do at the time. If I new I was going to be buying/building a .338 AI, I would have stepped up from the 1800S to the 2200S, but hindsight is 20/20. I would love a Terrapin, but it is also triple the price. That is another Nightforce for me or an ATACR.

It's also triple the rangefinder. I have used many different rangefinders, while the Newcon/Bushnell/leica/Swarovski may range to X,ooo meters today, I believe that their reliability over time will be mediocre at best. None of the mentioned LRFs are built to MIL spec so maybe for the fairweather shooter/hunter they may suffice but for an avid long range shooter I would not consider those options viable. I would go even further by calling them a waste of money but that is just my opinion. Flame away boys!

Kryogen,

I have had a Leica 1200 since shortly after they came out. It has never missed a beat, and I have successfully ranged trees (which are not very reflective) to beyond 1300 yd. At least that is what the unit was indicating.

Have never used it hunting because I am not good enough to kill game reliably beyond 400 yards in the field, however on our silhouette range at the club, it is accurate to within 3-5 yards, all the way out to 500 meters.

Not sure if that is adequate enough for your needs, but they cost half of your budget goal.

I ordered the newcon 2200SI from a shop here in quebec.

850$ + tax + shipping. Not too bad, can range nato target to 2200m. Real life performance, I dont know, I will compare to mush terrapin when I get it, and report to others.

Probably will not be as good as the terapin, but it's 1/3 the price.

Sweet! Please post something about the performance once you have it in hand and can field test it. Cheers!

got it today, awesome unit.

Ranges extremely well and fast so far.
Furthest thing I can range here so far is a building 750M away and it just ranges it in a second, bam. Trees also work fine.

Will report this weekend with more tests.

CLARIFICATION: Those are not tests I did for range, I just zapped some stuff around. Those are not the max ranges that I got. I will try to test max range and report this weekend.

tried it tonight, ranged trees to 1050m
and some reflective target to 1200m (house I think)

wasnt able to get it to range trees further, but I didnt have a steady distance gradient to range, and I was just hand holding it.

Seems good for my needs though, and the 7x zoom helps see the target. Will test it more this weekend.
