I'm interested in buying an SKS, but would like to have a detachable 30 rnd mag that is pinned to 5 rounds. I like the look of the larger cap mag, or even the ability to swap mags out.

Is this possible?
Do I have to change stocks to do this?
Have you done this, and where would I buy or order the mag from?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Tapco, amongst others make them. Most gun stores carry them from ~$30 or so. One I bought was a 30 round pinned to 5. You have to disassemble to remove you old one, and the new acts like a detachable mag. Most fit, but sometimes you may have to take a dremel and sand down the mag insert, as they can be a tight fit.

How do I identify it as an SKS-D? or How do I tell it it will take an AR15 mag?

SKS-D

Notice the magazine release just behind the magazine. no other obvious external differences. Unless the seller is an idiot, they will advertise it as "Takes AK mags!"

And SKS modified for AR15 magazines will have an adapter hanging down beneath the stock line with a normal AR15 magazine release as well. Also the interior of the receiver will be heavily modified to take AR magazines. Unless the seller is an idiot, they will advertise it as "Takes AR mags!". Currently we have no "supplier" of these adapters, and US made ones cannot be used in their stock configuration.

This thread details a Canadian made and designed AR-SKS magazine adapter: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/845857-LEGAL-10-round-SKS-with-detachable-mag-accomplished!

buy a sks, remove the attached mag, shave a bit of the wood from the stock around the magwell so the detachable mag fits. shoot.

tapco mags are dependable awesome 5/20 round mags. I bought a 5/40 round promag (from hi cal) strickly for looks. big awesome bannan clip hanging from my sks but it is not as reliable as my tapcos.

no sks takes ar 15 mags with out custome work or custom adapters. it wont be a SKS D unless you pay $600 and up for it. your regular russian $200 SKS will have a non removable mag. like I said before buy the SKS remove the factory mag and install a tapco. no major mods required.

You can also buy the "USA" metal mags. They work great. Sometimes they need a bit of filing to fit. Easy with a Dremel.

Look, my '50 SKS just saw Maria Sharapova!

I tried both the Tapco and metal mags - the "duckbill" style. Never needed to shave the magwell of my wood stock (your mileage may vary - lots of differences in tolerance in the build of the stocks).

Traded them all for ammo, went back to the standard mag and stripper clips. No practical use for the extended mags unless the law changes.

These ones have a good rep as far as the metal ones are concerned:
