I couldn't help myself...and picked up another FS2000

So, I was reading this thread last month and was explaining my likes and dislikes of the Tavor and the FS2000 and mentioned that I'd probably get another FS2000 at some point in the future. I was thinking at the time that since they'd been (apparently) discontinued that they might not be the best choice to pick right now, though. But, like a song that gets into your head even if you don't want it to, I couldn't stop thinking about the FS2000. One thing led to another, and I ended up picking one up off the EE.

I've owned two before, and sold both to buy other, more "sensible" rifles, but the FS2000 has a draw on me like no other black rifle. They have their quirks...oh lord, they have their quirks. Let's see...there's the challenging trigger pull, tricky chamber access, magazine type limitation, and now, maybe issues with their discontinuance. But, when I picked this one up, it was like putting on a favourite pair of jeans. Sure, it's short and a little thick in the middle--as am I :)--but it really feels like it was designed for me, it's that comfortable. And the trigger pull, while different, can be managed. The trick is to find the point at the start of the second stage--it's not that hard--just before the final break. The release at that point is short, crisp with a positive, very short reset. The mag issue doesn't bother me--I use 10-round LARs usually with C-products floorplates so they don't get lost up the tall magwell. I'm not doing shooting any competitions that require fast mag changes so the lack of drop free functionality doesn't bother me either. I find their balance point (just at the pistol grip) more comfortable than the Tavor's more rearward balance, and my experience is that the FS2000 is also more accurate the the Tavor. Restricted status doesn;t change how I shoot this rifle, either, since there's no Crown Land shooting in Nova Scotia and all my shooting is range-only anyway.

Maybe I'll be able to resist sensibility and logic this time and hang onto this one! :)

Here's my younger daughter four years ago in a picture from this thread about my first FS2000:

and here she is with the latest...the rifle looks a little smaller now!

I'm still using the Trijicon RMR on the rifle--I like its small size and light weight....more details here.

I'm not sure where you heard they're discontinued. According to the FN Rep I spoke with at SHOT this year, they are putting a hold on this gun for a year to deplete their current supply/build demand for next year.

Btw great purchase! So jelly :D

It is a slick looking gun. How are mag changes?
They're a little tricky. There's a gasket inside the magwell, ostensibly to help keep dirt out of the rifle's interior--it's what prevents magazines from dropping free. There are two ways that I use to remove the magazines:

If you're using a 5/30 magazine you can use the knuckle of your left index finger to depress the mag release, then grip the mag body and pull it out:

For the LAR mags with the ringed floorplate I can use my left thumb to depress the release and grab the ring with my fingers--this works really well (although not super fast!):

You are hilarious! I'd love to shoot one, and maybe buy one one day. A rifle must be good to pick it up for a third time.

Non restricted?
Restricted, unfortunately, by 1.1 inches. Although, with no Crown Land shooting here, all my shooting is range only anyway so for me it's not a big inconvenience.

My wife just said, "Tell them my wife thinks I'm nuts". :) This is the fifth firearm that I've re-purchased a similar model after selling the original...and twice I've re-purchased the exact gun I sold. I think this is the first "three-peat" however.

Master-G - have you tried polishing/lubing the trigger rods? It made my trigger pull SIGNIFICANTLY smoother. You can remove the rods without disassembling the rifle - it comes out through the back with a little finaggling. :)

Flitz metal polish, and about 1/2 hour of elbow grease, and now it's MUCH better. I'd still like to try a Neu-Trigger, but good luck getting one up here!

Nice rifle - your posts have put me on to looking for an RMR as well... maybe not for my FS2000, but for something else. My NF 2.5-10x24 feels perfect on the FS for me.

That gun scares the sheet out of me. Just thinking about disassembly/cleaning/reassembly makes me want to take a valium. I think an AR15 is hard enough to understand and keep running. It does look awesome, I just have bad luck with complicated firearms.

It's one of the easiest guns I've ever had to disassemble/clean/reassemble, like ridiculously easy. Probably the only easier one is my PS90...

I'd agree, at least disassembly down to major components (upper, lower, hammer group, and bolt group). I've found that disassembly of the bolt group to be a little fussy, but also not necessary very often since it's a clean-running rifle.

I'd not tried that--I'm actually OK with the trigger pull--but maybe I'll try it out.
