9mm pistol round for deer?

A 10mm is like a 30-06, in that all you need to do is hold a cartridge in your hand and make a wish, and you can drop a deer from 300.

The only way you're getting enough penetration with a 9mm is if you tape it to the end of a pike and you and the deer charge each other.
 
Holding a 9mm cartridge in one's hand does not inspire confidence, but loaded with a premium bullet, I suppose it would work. There's no real magic, a 147 gr 9mm bullet expands to say .60", penetrates a foot or so, and the deer bleeds out. A prudent hunter would conduct sufficient testing to determine the maximum practical range where terminal bullet performance could be considered reliable, then abandon the project and pick up a .308. If you're going to carry a rifle anyway, chamber it for a rifle cartridge. Next up, the .32 ACP for bear defense.
 
I took a deer last fall with a 357 rifle , shot it in the neck broke the spine and dropped right there, but the bullet only went a couple inches past the spine , this was a 200 lbs buck , did the 357 work yes , will I do it again with that load NO . A pistol 158 grain JSP is probably designed to expand at velocities as low 1000fps . At a chronograhed velocity of 1825 fps 15 feet from the muzzle , this bullet was probably going 1700 fps at the 22 yards I shot the deer at , too much for a plain JSP , a 95 grain lead pancake is all I found of the bullet , jacket was never found , taking a deer with a 9mm rifle is doable but the hunter has to be a diciplined person that will pass up all but the best shot, If taking a deer with a 9 mm is your goal go for it , if deer hunting is your goal get a more than capable rifle because things can get weird when deer hunting . Taking a deer with my little Rossi 357 was a goal for me , and it took 3 seasons to accomplish it
 
I'm sure it will work on small deer at close range. Bullet selection will be important though.

Someone send me a Destroyer Carbine and I'll take a deer with it.
 
I wish we could hunt with a hand gun. Reading stuff from those that do and with my limited experience with hand guns I would definitely do it with my 44 mag SBH, I'd treat like a bow hunt limiting my shots to 50 yds or so. I wouldn't use a 357 mag unless I was desperate. If someone gave me a 9mm to hunt deer even a rifle, I'd sell it and buy some steaks at Costco.

Oh, and beavers are pretty thick skinned I'd say 25-20 minimum.

It is not adequate. A .45 Colt is much better, and even better is a 12 gauge with at least BB shot size. You obviously haven't seen the size of spurs Northern grouse are packing.
 
Oh, I get it. You're a troll. Sorry, I failed to grasp that.

The bottom line is, 9x19 can, will and has killed deer. Not the best option but it will certainly do the job provided the shooter does theirs.

Lol...that's what it is. You have me figured out.

But please don't let this derail the thread. How many deer have you killed with the 9x19? What loads did you use?
