Trigger and pistol grip moved on Tapco'd SKS

This is a proof-of-concept prototype for an SKS rebuild I'm working on. It was intended to test the feasibility of moving the trigger and pistol grip in order to balance the Simonov Carbine. It also facilitates a magazine release integrated with the trigger guard, which enables a more modern tactical manipulation of the rifle.

It should be noted that this prototype lacks a planned improved safety lever.

So all that work was primarily to better balance the rifle while in an aftermarket stock?
I equaled the weight on my Tapco SKS by inserting a handful of fishing sinker weights wrapped in a rag into the stocks hidden tube compartment. Crude and simple but proven effective.

I equaled the weight on my Tapco SKS by inserting a handful of fishing sinker weights wrapped in a rag into the stocks hidden tube compartment. Crude and simple but proven effective.

The AR-15's pistol grip sits approximately 3 inches behind the rifle's centre of balance. The SKS' pistol grip is closer to 8. Even if you added weight to the butt-stock, the entirety of the rifle's action and milled steel receiver is forward of the weapon retention hand. On a rifle with a 20 inch barrel, no less! This, along with the distance between the grip and the magazine, make a modern style of weapon manipulation very awkward. The design and location of the magazine release tab adds another layer of awkwardness. Also, adding weight to the buttstock does nothing to improve how far away from your body most of the rifle's weight is. There are solid ergonomic reasons why an SKS in a Tapco stock feels very long and front-heavy to shoulder.

The benefits of my modification are as follows.

- The weight of the rifle is balanced much better, with the weapon retention grip moved closer to the rifle's centre of balance.

- The re-design of the magazine release means that one need not relinquish fire control to change magazines, even for tactical magazine swaps.

- The overall length of the rifle is shorter, since there is no need to extend the butt-stock to achieve a good length of pull. also, the rifle's weight is now being held closer to the shooter's body

- With the pistol grip attached to the trigger group, tightening down the grip actually helps suck the receiver down into the stock, helping to bed the action (much better than the spring tension in a stock SKS)

I hope to have some action videos up in this thread soon, but I haven't planned any more improvements for this rifle at this time.

Well that was a very long picture thread, so your few posts were not taking it over lol. Thanks for the explanation, as I see those features are needed with the AR platform, and CQB use.
But most, if not all of the SKS users in here just stand still and plink with the SKS. Very little manuervabilty needed. Just standin' and shootin'. Most moving around would be when its used for hunting. That is mostly carrying then aiming though. No clearing rooms or fighting with Jihad Joe that I know of.

The fact that hical.ca sells out of Tapco and Archangel stocks as fast as they get them in tells me that for every guy who just feeds his all-stock rifle with stripper clips and blasts at pop cans, there's another guy who wants a non-restricted black rifle and can't afford one. There are plenty of applications for a modern tactical rifle applicable to the average citizen besides clearing out Jihad Joe. For that, you need a rifle that does more than look tactical. And that is where my mod comes in, achieving parity with modern tactical rifles at a fraction of the cost

Hmmm, I tend to believe that the people who buy the AA stock are the same ones buying the Tapco...plinkers and target shooters with an urge to mod the rifle. Purely for aesthetics, with a dash of comfort adjustment capability thrown in.
What other application are people using their modified SKS rifles for besides plinking and hunting? Competition? Drills? In the line of duty? Haven't heard of any of that happening myself, ever.
People mod the hell out of them for fun, then stand there and shoot them.

The guy did some decent work on a rifle he is proud to own, feels like he improved and is sharing what he learned with the community. It's not what I'd do for mods, I like my original SKS. But at least give the guy credit for some custom ingenuity.

Oh I give credit when I feel its due. I haven't said he outright wasted his time, have I(?)...regardless of anyone's perception or insecurities.
But I'm not going to blindly applaud something I don't fully understand as being necessary. So questions on the merit of the modification should be expected.

Funny. I figured a few collectors would hammer on me for making a change that could not be undone. Never figured on defending the Why. I really thought the benefits would be obvious. Who wouldn't want more functionality from an inexpensive and solid weapons system? Anyway, all feedback is helpful if it's honest. I was hoping to gauge the interest in function-based enhancements for this platform. Thanks to everyone who spoke up so far.

I will give you credit. Not many would go down this path. I kinda figured the purists would be all over you too. While I won't be attempting this mod with my current trigger group, I might give it a go if I got a good deal on one to play with. Great job, btw.
