Ruger SR1911 front sight snap right off (RESOLVED)

The first time that I dealt with snapshots about the front sight snapping off they were great....but low and belohd only another 450 rounds before the sight just snapped off again. I really like the profile of the original sight but I think that I will look elsewhere for a second replacement. I still love the SR1911 but this front sight problem is a real PITA

I was just asked, by PM, what sights I would suggest for a Can Am 1911. I answered:

I just did it to a few of the Can Ams.

One got a Fusion stake on, to replace the staked on sight that came with the gun. Cost about $23 on ebay. I have used both red and green, and prefer the red. Others swear by the green. I used the lowest one they make, 0.170" There are two sizes of the front sight tenon (the little tab that goes into the slot cut in the slide). The Norinco uses the original (small) tenon. Order small or Colt Series 70.

Most of my Norcs got a dovetail cut in them to take a dovetailed front sight. This makes it easier to change the sight in the future, and it is a more secure way of installing a front sight. Your gunsmith will have to cut the dovetail, so ask him what size cutter he has, first.

The most common size dovetail is the Novak, so this is the size I got. I bought them from Dawson Precision. I ordered a low, narrow one. Low allows the use of the original rear sight. Narrow gives me more space on either side of the sight for a better sight picture (old eyes).

As of an hour and a half ago I too am now a victim of the sr1911 front site problem gun is two 18 days old and has 800 rounds through. The shop I bought it from said they would call them(snapshots) Monday and ask if they could send the replacement and they would install it here in Saskatoon. Other than that I love the sr1911.

For such a simple failure this thread has steered me away from Rugers offerings for a 1911.
I have never owned a 1911 but I have shot some.
does/has any other manufacture had the same issue, or is it just Ruger?

I'm going to perform a little thread necromancy here and add that my front sight snapped off just shy of the 1,000 round mark last week.

I opted to replace both the front and rear sights rather than deal with this same problem in another 1,000 rounds. I will simply have a local smith take care of it rather than deal with the headache. I'll be trying the fibre optic front sight and adjustable novak cut rear sight from Dlask.

I guess Norincos don't look so much like crap, anymore, eh.
And clip and mag, are interchangable. I thought we cleared that up.

Not sure I would rate the overall quality of the gun based on that stupid front sight problem.
I'm still quite happy with the SR1911. Good bang for the buck (pun intended)

Just saw this thread tonite and not giving me a warm fuzzy feeling. I thought Novak stuff was pretty good? Will have to keep an eye on mine. IMO the upgraded front sight should be at no cost if Ruger is the company I thought they were.

Novak is the dovetail cut, but Ruger MIM'd that front sight. One thing with Ruger is they will cast and MIM everything they can to produce the cheapest firearm possible.
Dlask, Freedom Ventures have replacement sights....standard black ramped STI is $20.

No, Norinco is still crap entry level stuff....lol
And noooooo.....mag and clip are only interchangeable if you are 10 or under...
