.22LR High Velocity - Is it me or is it getting scarce?

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but YES, you are the one who is getting scarce, not the ammo. There's lots of .22 HV around if you care to look for it.

Win 333 is $16 here. You guys out west are getting ripped.

It's getting really annoying hearing our western and central Canada friends say "no shortage here" every time we Ontario folks ask about the status of 22lr in Ontario!!

Do you think we are making it up?

There was a shipment of Winchester crap that arrived in Ontario a few weeks ago and merchants are selling it for cheap because some of us prefer quality...

These shortage threads pop up twice a day. The weird thing is most of the eastern posts are people saying that their local Canadian Tire is out of ammo. The answer seems simple to me, don't go to a hardware store to buy ammo, go to a LGS.

not that long ago it would have taken a chap with deep pockets to 'lick' the shelves clean of 22 ammo. If many of the posters here can do that, its obvious there is NOT plenty of 22 ammo around. my local gs has no high velocity 22 ammo at all, he used to have cases of ammo by the door this time of year, and big bill board advertising gopher ammo by the case. You cannot buy a case of ammo from him now, a brick yes, but not a case. He doesn't have one to sell, and wouldn't if he did, as he needs to spread the ammo out to the guys who buy 22's. Prices are up as well.

The really weird thing is in the real east there is not much population per sq mile .. no population not many LGS .. there are LGS , in 2012 a LGS 60 miles away wanted to sell me 50 45acp for $48.00 and SFRC had then for $18.00.

The second really weird thing is there are not that many plinkers , mostly hunters, so any LGS has to charge $48.00 for a box of 45acp to survive, but not to me!

Now I only know about the real east, as Ontario and Quebec seem to be central on my map

On-line retailers have had little or no quality ammo like CCI for a long time, Cabela's had a bit but not any more .. CTC my 22lr source brought in one box of Federal 525 bulk copper washed each month as long as I bought the last one it seems. I did them that service for 15 months .. last 4 months no new Bulk Federal . Same as the CTC 69 miles away. SFRC sold me some 45acp in 2012 and all the CCI speciality ammo ( velositors, mini mags, quiets) that I wanted for the long term ..pay shipping , buy in bulk. Maybe CTC is supplying the full gun sales stores first, or they had to sign a new supply contract for a smaller piece of the pie. Who knows.

Quick edit: lots of the west has low numbers per square mile, but they have gophers, and lots of plinkers, and a bigger non hunting gun culture so more LGS .. We are just getting a Cabela's in New Brunswick now! I think I read 80% of swiss and possably cz58's were located in Alberta , Bc .. do not quote me on that :)

Saw over 50,000 rounds today at McLeod Trail-Canadian Tire- $35 for 500 rounds Remington Thunder.

I can't think of a worse brand of any ammo than remington thunderbolts... That is a terrible price as well. If anyone wants to sell me some cheap .22 I am open to all offers!

It is getting scarce. Nothing from ATK (Federal, CCI and others) has showed up in 12 months in my local small town with the exception of a few very small shipments. My LGS is also having a hard time getting anything from ATK, as is almost every forum vendor it seems. Yes there are a few small shipments coming in but they're gone in a couple days or hours... Based on my experiences over the last year.

Rem and winchester (among others) seems to be showing up periodically to tide us over. However ATk makes 2 of my top 3 preferred brands/types of 22 lr so I can't wait for the Americans to slow down their buying.

It's all a self-perpetuated cycle. Obama threatens gun bans, so Americans get whipped into a panic buying frenzy and clean stores out of everything they can find. The .22 LR is the cheapest round going so that's what gets hoarded the most. Canadians hear about panic buying and shortages and so commence doing same until there's nothing left. The reality is if Americans and Canadians continued their regular buying patterns based on their actual usage there would be no shortage!

There are auctions down south of a brick of .22 going for $80 and up. STILL.

Was in Cabelas last night and the only .22 LR on the shelf was Remington Subsonics, and very little of that. Even the Remington Garbage Pail of Bullets were sold out at an absurd $80 a piece.

Obama energized 1/3 of the non-gun owners to get out and buy guns, and the current gun owners to get out and buy ammo. The market for ammo has literally tripled overnight down south. the producers will catch up in time, but not for a while.

I bought a brick of Wildcat for $23.99 in NS yesterday, not the last one they had but getting low. Not consistent ammo through my target rifle, not at all. I was lucky to hold an inch and a half group at 50 yards, 100 yards was more like 3+ inches, but there was some wind involved too. Time to bite the bullet (sic) and buy some Lapua or something else decent.
