I know there are at least 2 22LRs that are restricted. Why is this? At Wholesale Sports I saw a $700 22 LR that was restricted, I'm not sure what kind it was but it looked like something from the AR platform. The other is the Ruger SR 22 if I'm not mistaken. Can someone explain why these are restricted and what other 22 LRs make the restricted list? It makes no logical sense whatsoever.

"It makes no logical sense whatsoever" thats true!

Restricted .22 rifles include:

S&W M&P 15-22
Colt M4-22
H&K 416-22
Any AR-15 with a .22 upper

I believe the above are all considered AR-15 variants.

However, the Ruger SR-22 is NON restricted

they were classified as restricted for being variants of actual restricted rifles. while the M&P 15 could never shoot centerfire, it was designed to mirror an actual AR platform, hence restricted. same with the Colt. I'm unfamiliar with the H&K, but it's likely the exact same reason.

They are basically restricted because they look like a named restricted rifle (AR-15) and share some vague similarities. It gets worse...there are several semi auto .22s that are prohibited because they reassembly a prohibited firearm, i.e.: HK MP5 .22, Walther Uzi rifle .22, etc.

Thanks. But why? 22 caliber is ####ing 22 caliber. Are these rifles too short or something?

Because the RCMP does what it wants in regards to classification with no oversight or recourse on the part of the people they are screwing over. They classify things according to cosmetic features they don't like and ignore the actual rules set out in the legislation. Somewhere around here is an internal RCMP report from 2010 where they state they want to reclassify the SR-22 and Mossberg 715 to restricted as AR variants simply because they look too much like an AR.

Well then they better classify my #### as prohibited because I work at Tim Horton's and I'm the one that makes holes in the donuts.

Geez...with the size of the holes in donuts, I'm not sure I'd be bragging about that. :)

As for the question~you're looking for "sense" where there is none to be found. The AR variant thing might make an ounce of sense if I actually believed ARs should be restricted in Canada in the first place. Which I don't. It has mostly to do with looking like restricted rifles, and an ounce of mo-jo, and which way the wind is blowing at the time, and what the RCMP had for breakfast that morning, the day of the week, etc. lol It is entirely ridiculous, but so too are many of the gun laws in Canada. My personal beef has to do with suppressors, and why we can't have them here in Canada when there are places in some western countries where you have to use them if you want to discharge a firearm. I suspect our laws are based someone's interpretation of a James Bond movie.

I often think I should buy something like a Benelli R-1 then find a scary black stock to put it in, then mount a whole bunch of rails etc...

Silly how looks matter with firearms but we are supposed to value things for what's on the inside.....22 is 22 and will never be more. And any semi can be modded to full. It's so dumb. We don't cuz it's illegal. And we value our freedom which apparently can be taken from for shooting a 22 on a farm if happens to be shot from a pistol.

Yea I have a 22. A restricted Armi Jager AP-74. Looks exactly like an M16 with one big technical difference. It can't accept one single AR15 component without modification. Bought it when I was a kid in the 80's. We had lots of fun at the camp with it. those were the days. Sometimes we brought along my Colt AR15A2. Those f...ers.
