My ULTIMATE Dream PISTON SBR... UPDATE

That PWS Piston system looks pretty interesting. Just looked it up online. I like that the bolt carrier and rod are one piece. Makes alot of sense.

My 12 inch in 223 has over 4000 rounds through it without needing any parts and without a failure of any kind (other than operator induced). Seems to be reliable, I still can't see any real wear on any parts.

I swapped over my Elcan Specter DR since this picture.
The Hi-Lux in this pic is the 223 version and the one on the 300BLK is the AK version with the 7.62x39 reticle.
The BUIS have been removed since both pics to make room for my 3bucc brass catcher mounts on both.

Was hoping for today... not raining and the wife owes me a few hours. So I may head out this afternoon. Ill try to get a bit of a video too just for fun.

Still waiting to hear how it shoots ;)

I'm hoping to get out Monday or Tuesday and do some more testing with mine. I think I should have all the kinks worked out now and can do some accuracy testing.

I have now got about 700 rounds through it with not a single stoppage for any reason. All mags seat and feed perfectly including some AA .50 mags with 15 rounds. I shot out to 50 yards with my 4x and was getting 3/4 to 1 inch groups consistently with norc ammo.
Last weekend I shot my first match with it and we had a section with 5 targets at 50 yards, all head shots and I scored a zero. I can't ask for more. It's just an incredibly soft shooting gun. Very very little recoil so staying on target and following up is quick and easy.

The KX3 is definitely the balls. I was shooting with a bunch of guys with 10-12 inch ARs. Most had standard comps/flash hiders and they were all obnoxious. Mine was actually quieter than all the other 16 inch guns. I found this makes it easier to shoot as the concussion isn't as distracting.

After 700 rounds I haven't cleaned it and the bolt/chamber has just a mild black coating that can be wiped off with an oiled cloth. Absolutely zero build up inside. However, there has to be a compromise and it comes in the form of build up of the hand guard around the gas block. Obviously where the piston is expelling gas. It's easy to wipe off... Certainly easier than your average AR cleaning regiment. So it's not an issue.

I think this gun has bee money very well spent.

I was running a piston SBR for a while. It was pretty sweet soft shooting, so I know what you mean.
However, it was a heavier CMMG kit. It has an enclosed system with a tube that the piston rides in.
Can't say I saved any time in cleaning as it was like having a second barrel to clean.

I'm currently using the piston kit on my 7.62x39 build.

UPDATED WITH FINAL SETUP AND CHANGES. Includes new pics.

This thing has been months in the making. My goal in building it was to have a piston SBR that was as light as possible. Its finally done and its exactly what I wanted. Its short, but not too short, its super light and it points like a dart. Its simple and uncluttered but has all the stuff I felt I really needed. It fits like a glove. I have no idea what the final cost is... I stopped counting a long time ago. I just figured, if I was going to own an AR, it had to be the exact AR I wanted to own. This is it.

Parts list is as follows:
-DDM4 V5 upper and lower
-DD 10.3 CHF Barrel (carbine)
-DD 9.5 light rail
-DD Bolt and bolt parts
-Adams Arms piston conversion system, carbine length with railed gas block.
-Adams Arms light weight bolt carrier
-CMC drop in trigger, 4 LBS, curved trigger
-Phase 5 V2 Bolt release
-Phase 5 charge handle
-Phase 5 enhanced trigger guard
-Extended mag release
-Magpul MAID grip,VFG and CTR stock
-Noveske KX3 muzzle device
WEIGHT: 8.6 lbs with empty Gen 3 Pmag installed

Is the barrel profile heavy contour or are the optic and the gas system accountable for that weight?

Its a standard profile barrel, I would say the piston system accounts for a bit of the weight. But not THAT much IMO. The light bolt carrier helps off set some of that as well. The KX3 is so heavy... but its effective to the point its worth the trade off. I bet it weights nearly an lb on its own. Optic is an LB for sure. The optic is heavy. No question. Im considering a red dot with flip to side magnifier with a QR mount. But its an expensive proposition and I'm tight on funds now. Lol. The gun doesnt FEEL heavy to use. But its definitely heavier than a more basic DI AR.
