Last night I had to mercy kill a deer I found on the highway. Someone had shot it either in the high guts, or very back of the lungs. It was dying slowly.

I found it at 11:30 at night, with nobody around. It had fallen down for good, but was far from dead.

Can we please all just take an extra second to make our shots? It's our responsibility to do things properly, not just to go around shooting. If you can't do that then you shouldn't be allowed to own a rifle.

I have pictures if interested, but the point is someone had his head up his butt, and we should all make sure it doesn't happen.

Don't think so. It was outside town where people own a lot of property so maybe someone just figured it's worth it.

That confused me too.

Poachers kill deer whenever/however it suits them. conscience is not a big impediment.

True......sadly , some ignorant and pathetic people care about nothing besides themselves . It may have been a poacher looking for meat , or maybe just someone out poaching for a thrill kill......some just like to kill because it makes them feel like a tough guy ; really , how tough does someone have to be to shoot a deer out of season , then just let it run off wounded to die . I have no use for people who knowingly violate game laws ; all these types of actions do is make professional hunters and firearm owners look bad , not to mention the needless pain and suffering that it causes for the animal ......just my personal opinion...

Sounds like it was done on purpose, so it would die somewhere else. People can get real protective of their ornamental plants and such. Not that I'm condoning it, but you hear things.

And shot at nighttime too, I seem to remember 'no shooting 30 mins before sun down or after sun up' when I took my hunter safety course...although I think that's pretty low on the list for the rules broken, moral and legal and otherwise.

Coulda been hit from a stray bullet.
Good thing you were able to do the deed.
I've seen them right skinny this time of year.
Did you keep it or leave it?

The deer was shot...

I don't know if it was shot before sunset but since the bullet was so badly placed I'm sure it took a few hours for it to reach the state I found it in.

Out of season.... So the time of day doesn't really make a difference.. Just saying, whatever happened.. it's certainly not hunting

You are talking to hunters here... you need to find the "Poachers forum"... otherwise you are preaching to the choir...

Yeah not exactly hunting, but I wanted to get it off my mind by reminding everyone to aim carefully. I get more angry at irresponsible gun owners than I do at anti-gun lobbyists.

It wasn't too skinny, just young. Couple years maybe. I had my pocket knife with me and so I cut the artery. After it was over I just thought it was a pointless death. I didn't keep it, didn't feel right. I let it die then dragged it off the highway thinking coyotes will have an easy meal.

Yes, it is unfortunate... just remember to direct your anger at the criminal who did it and his/her ilk... not the responsible firearms owners and dedicated hunters on this board... real hunters are more the naturalist and environmentalist than all of the yuppy, loafer wearing, headline grabbing, urban mouthpieces...

Your memory is faulty.

Everybody jumps to poaching, cant natives hunt whenever they want? Im sure every single person thats commented so far has claimed % 100 of what they shot at anybody think the hunter may have pulled the shot but did try and track it? But your right it has to be a poacher and a liberal and their wifes boyfriend.

If it was hunting season would everyone feel the same.

Couldn't say definitely when it could have been shot.

Couldn't even begin to speculate on the circumstances.

If it was in season would people be less likely to condone?

Don't critique the shot unless you know all the circumstances.Everyone that hunts states that a miss will or has happened, if this was deer season would it been looked at any different or would the "hunters" still be saying to find another hobby until their shooting skills improved?
