First Handgun Threads

Good luck. People like to ask, people like to answer

As well they should. Your first gun is exciting (so is your second, third, fourth... Okay if I ever stop getting excited about new guns, I'll hang up my spurs). I like to jump in with my opinion too. I just thought that this would be a good place to start for most people. Lots of good info contained in these threads.

Are you mad Bro?:D

So a .22LR Pistol OR Revolver.
Or do you mean buy both types. what about single-shot types?
Which is it Eh!

Maybe someone should start a new thread!

For all those that can't use the search function. And if you're too lazy to read through these, here's the Cliff's Notes version: Buy a .22LR pistol/revolver first.

Can we make this a sticky?

I'm not mad at all, bro. I was just thinking it would be a good idea to bring them all together as a reference. But seeing that the link brings up no match now, forget about it. (Perhaps the search results time out after a certain period?)

Oh and of course I meant to get both a pistol AND a revolver. Get everything your heart desires.

Why not just buy an airgun? Not everyone wants to shoot perfect little groups, some want to feel some recoil.

I succumbed to this "buy a .22" pressure and bought a well used Ruger Mark 1 target. It is the least used pistol I own. It's not for sale though because it's wicked accurate and feeds like a dream. :)

I received that advice first, also. I'm very happy with the Buckmark URX I purchased. It fits well, shoots excellent and is great. Indeed, my second pistol was a Desert Eagle .50. Much more fun, and just as easy to shoot. After that, I bought a 9mm. I would not say a .22 as a first pistol is a good choice. I would say to try different models, if you can. The best pistol for your first one is one that fits you well, shoots well, is manageable, and one you understand how to operate properly & safely. I guess that would probably apply to the pistols you bought after, as well.

How did folks buy their guns before there was the internet? How did you buy your clothes without physically trying them on first? How did you decide on which vehicle to buy? :p

I think it is a great way for newbie's to get a feel for CGN, they know damn well what gun they want but need to get some posts in so they can get access to the EE.
I didn't find a .22 pistol much help when it came time to shooting bigger calibres but I still like shooting them, just picked up another one so off to the range.
Finding .22LR ammo is a chore these days at least in Vancouver.

Okay, let me clear this up. I bought a 9mm first. I don't think I suffered any from that decision. However, a .22 allows you to learn the fundamentals cheaply. I don't find them exciting, but when I notice myself getting sloppy with my 9 or my .357, a .22 helps me get my focus back.

It also allow me to extend my range time without feeling guilty about the money I'm dropping. It doesn't help you deal with recoil, which is probably one of the biggest hurdles after you have mastered the fundamentals. For that, you need to shoot a centerfire handgun.

First handgun is always special for people who is new to the target shooting sports. Myself included. Whether it is .22LR caliber or 9mm, .40CAL, etc... is more critical than the actual handgun per say. I remembered that when I was interested in handguns, many friends suggested to start with .22LR and then get a .40cal or above as they have stopping power, but for the sport I was, and still am, was target shooting. So, I purchased my first .22LR and I enjoyed it but in the short run, I lost interested in .22LR. But, I always enjoyed 9MM cal handgun and still am today. Back to the .22LR, it is a safe queen. I also have a .45ACP 1911 which I though I would have interest in, but 9mm Glock is my preferred target/competition handgun.
