My new :dancingbanana: S&W 686+ .357 mag has wood grips but I was thinking about ordering rubber ones as well for plinking. Are there any strong preferences for Pachmayr vs Hogue our there? Where can I get them online from a Canadian source?

Did you try shooting with the wood grips before thinking of changing? My 686 has wood target grips and they feel VERY comfy.

I prefer the Hogue's, but the last pair I bought didn't fit my S&W. There are differences in grip shape from one gun to another over the years, so they aren't exactly alike. Rubber is more forgiving that way. Something to think about.

i like the look and feel of the hogue grips better, but Pachmyer is a little thicker and tames recoil a little better i think. i have hogue rubber on my 629 and redhawk

Thanks fellas.

I have not fired the revolver yet. I'm still waiting for all me reloading components to show up. As far as the grips were concerned, I just wanted a second set of grips that would perhaps be more enjoyable to shoot in terms of recoil for stiffer loads.

I have Hogue's on my 617 and 686 and they're quite nice. They're fairly 'rubbery' and provide a solid grip against your palm, even if you have hands that can get a bit sweaty or greasy.

Before you buy anything take off your existing grips and find out if your gun has a square or round butt. The Hogue site has a few foolproof pics for you to use for comparisons. And if you're in Calgary, 911 Supplies carries Hogue products, although you might have to special order with them. It's been a while since I was in there.

Already done. The 686+ has round butt and I believe an L frame.

I had Pachmayrs on my S&W 629. I found that when using heavier loads there was some grip movement at the seam where the two halves comes together. I switched to one piece fingergroove Hogues and like them much better. However, if you have REALLY large hands you might find the Hogues just a tad small as the Pachmayrs seemed a little bigger. I also have Pachmayrs on my S&W Model 14 PPC gun and with the light PPC loads they work fine (no grip movement).

I just finished reading 'Gun Digest Book on Revolvers'. Good read with a large section on grips and their differences. I bought Hogues for my 686. They feel a bit 'thin' in my average hand, but they do feel good. I have an old pair of Pachmayers, which feel just as good, but I like the look of the Hogues better. Hogues eliminate the grip screw, too. I shoot as well with either grip.

Love the gun, too. I shoot it much more accurately than my 226!

There are some damn nice wood grips on ebay for comparatively good prices. I got a nice set of hand checkered cocobolo grips for my model 14, WITH s&w medallions, for $12 bucks. They're not perfect liek the s&w $80 ones, but they're pretty decent.

I've used both and I like the Hogues a bit better, although I find them and little thin, the bottom finger groove a little low for me, and the rubber is a little squishier than it needs to be. I like Pachmayr Presentations, but they are too big for my liking, and since they cover the backstrap they increase the trigger reach more than I'd like. If the Pachmayr "Gripper" model had no finger groove it'd be my favourite grip--I like their shape a lot, but their finger groove spacing is even worse than the Hogues--I like a high hand hold, and for me the Grippers force my hand down too low on the grip. My favourite rubber grips ended up being the old-style GP100 wood-rubber grips, but that's no good for you of course. Back when I was into S&Ws in a big way I put Ahrends wood grips on all mine...my favourites were the Retro Target and the Retro Banana models.

I've been shooting S&W wheelguns for a very long time.

For shooting, I prefer Pachmayrs over Hogues or other grip types, including wood, on all mine.

I have tried several different types and this is what I settled on. Model 29 (N frame) has Hogue. Model 19 (K frame) has Pachmayrs. I tried them all and this is what I prefer, no rhyme or reason, just the way it is. I guess you just have to try them.

Good Luck.

I have very average sized hands, probably a bit shorter in the fingers than average. The trigger reach in double action on that revolver is a bit stretched as it is. It sounds like the Hogue would be best for my particular needs. So, next question: who sells them?
