So I finally climbed up into the bandwagon and got an SKS. Don't know how much I'll use it, but I hear all the cool kids are doing it, so...

Anyway, it came with some trinkets that I could use a little direction on.

Strap
Brush
Pin
Plunger
Brush holder
cannister
stripper clips
and a pouch

of most interest is the brush holder. It has a number of different holes and grooves that I expect are to be used with different bits and pieces for cleaning?

Whats the metal canister for? Gun oil? Or Vodka? ;-)

Some gentle guidance would be appreciated.

It's a 1950 Russian. $150 at Canadian Tire. So far, I'm getting a real kick out of the thought that went into engineering all those little features into a gun. Worth every penny.

A picture (or a link) is worth 1000 word's.

Pretty much everyone knows exactly what comes wth an sks.

The bottle is supposed to be for oil.
The pin and rod, and brush and other swivel type jag are all for cleaning.

Use put the brush or patch jag on the rod, the pin goes through the hold in the other end as a handle.
Pin also helpful in disassembly of the rifle.

the cap of the little can is a bore guide fits around the front sight

the cleaning rod goes through the can the can acts as a t-handle

put it all together with either the jag (the ribbed looking one)or the brush

the pin is used for takedown and to scrape crap off the bolt face and to clean out gas ports

Great pics Skoal.

Don't underestimate the use of the muzzle protector/bore guide, if your crown gets warn at all, your shots will be all over the place. Warn muzzle from improper cleaning are quite common.

Thanks everyone. Thanks especially to skoal - great pics. I had discovered that the cap fit nicely over the muzzle and assumed that it was a barrel protector to keep mud out of the barrel in messy situations... But I couldn't understand why there was a hole in it. Makes sense now :)

Canadian tire in simcoe, on. Sks's on sale from 199 to $149. And mosins from $250 down to $200. I think the sale is on until Friday... The regular flyer stuff is anyway.

He said they also have some with different (I assume aftermarket) stocks. A Monte Carlo and a thumb hole. Or maybe that was the mosins... Idk. I was distracted trying to sneak a gun out of the store without my wife noticing ;-)
