22LR AR's - which one?

Does it mimic exactly the real thing? What makes me refrain from most 22 AR's is that there is always something wrong on it. Like the inverted safety on the Walther/Colt M4..

Thanks, I had not seen those videos before. I think I will have to get one of those BHOAs. It is quite annoying not being able to use the bolt catch. The ad on the Questar site, says they only work with the second generation CMMG mags, but those were first gen mags in the video, so I am hopeful that it may work with the BD mags. Speaking of filing.... my upper was so tight when I received it that I could not close the upper all the way onto the lower. I few passes with a file on each side of the rear pin block, on the upper, solved the problem.

For what it's worth, I had a CMMG upper for a while and it worked well. The BOHA is worth having and can been tuned to your mags. The Forward Assist is more of a PITA than anything. First is that I never needed it, not even once. The way it fits in the bolt carrier is sloppy and I had one crack and replaced. Keep everything reasonably clean and it's a very reliable setup.

I sold my upper to finance other purchases and have since bought the stainless steel conversion bolt. Much to my surprise it's quite accurate and I haven't had a single regret or issue with it. It requires a little more cleaning of the rifle but I love cleaning guns so that's a bonus. I coat my conversion with FrogLube which makes cleaning a breeze.

Last year I used the Evolution mags with my upper and had problems getting a good ammo fit. Now I have several of the older grey mags and while they won't last as long they are less ammo sensitive. The problem with the evolution units was with ammo that was in the long OAL of the range. Those work best with Federal HP's as they are slightly shorter.

Thanks for the info!

I restrained from getting the conversion bolts because I didn't want lead deposits in my SR15 gas tube. Were it a cheaper upper I'd get a bolt too.

They don't result in leading in the gas tube. The .22 might lead up the barrel faster and blowback more powder residue but that's the extent of the situation and minor if you clean reasonably and run .223 in between .22 sessions.

Maintenance effort is actually less than using two uppers in my experience and the accuracy is adequate for many applications. I compete in Steel Challenge with my conversion bolt.

I had the conversion bolt prior to getting the CMMG upper. It functioned very well, but cleaning was a chore (I don't particularly like cleaning guns). The bolt conversion was minute of pop can accurate at 25 yards at best (in my 10.5" LMT upper). The CMMG upper (9.8" barrel) is minute of golf ball accurate at 25 yards or better. I still have not grouped it at 25 yds, but will post results as soon as I do.

Maybe. I've heard the contrary said as well. At any rate, the 16:1 twist and the actual .22 barrel should provide better shooting.

I get much better accuracy from my insert. One thing I did which I think helps is buy and install the brass locking lug. As far as cleaning is concerned for those who might go the conversion route, buy the stainless model. It cleans up very easily particularly when pretreated with lube. Froglube works great for me. I think that locking lug option is a good thing too. While my accuracy needs are modest, I would guess I get 2-3 inch groups at 25 yds with my rig. The barrel leading issue can be reduced by using plated bullets. It's never been a problem for me the way I use the gun.

The upper I got comes with the stainless unit. Will condition it with fireclean. What ammo have you had the best luck with? I hope they aren't finicky and only eat minimags..

I had issues with mine at first but found out it was the mags, not the gun. Eventually I settled with Federal HP bulk 36 gr. But that was because the HP's are a bit shorter and didn't bind in the Revolution/ Evolution mags. The ammo I like the best is CCI .40 which is like Mini Mags but uncoated. If you do have issues upgrading the extractor is a good idea. I did that before I figured is was the mags all along.
