Accurizing an sks

Lol.. Ya I have to agree. Heck Id go bolt action whatever if I wanted greater accuracy..BUT.. I just want to be able to shoot better than my buddies with their sks rifles..since there will be some money on the line this summer :)

Front sight chucked in a drill press, filed then finished with fine sandpaper works very well. A hand drill will work too. I've done several and they look factory. Bedding and trigger job is high on the list. I won't discourage you from supporting our sponsors but I do mine with the original parts. Deburr and polish contact surfaces, correct sear engagement, cut 2 coils off hammer spring, shorten sear and install over travel stop. Bed the recoil lug with trigger group locked in stock. Its best if you can rig it up so the action is being pulled forward into the stock crossbolt. I hang it from the ceiling by the barrel and attach some weight to the rear sling swivel. A peep sight or solidly mounted scope will serve you well. Consider hand loading for best accuracy. Surplus is not capable of better than 3-4 moa in my experience and commercial is expensive.

All excellent ideas. The SKS is not a precision rifle, but you can always make them shoot better!

I have a Russian SKS myself. I like the gun. I enjoy shooting it. But it is a short range carbine that cost me $250. Trying to turn an SKS into a precision rifle is like trying to turn a Mazda Protégé into a Formula One race car.
I agree, but that point is not being concealed or debated, as it was addressed and identified in OPs lead off post.
I personally like my SKS for throwing rounds at somewhat large targets at relatively close distances. Just what they were intended to do. Fend off an enemy advance/attack on the front line, or dish out suppressing fire. Fun, fun and more fun.
I've got other rifles for the longer range stuff, same as everyone else.

Removing the bayonet and cleaning rod also helps with accuracy on many SKS'. The less items hanging off or touching the barrel changing the vibration patterns the better.

Ijones,
When you say Poly spray what product are you referring to?
Thanks

Any polyurethane finish or clearcoat. You can use multiple coats of tung oil too. It just builds up some thickness and tightens up a slightly loose stock. Any time it wears a bit you just add more. Keeps things nice and snug. A really loose one will need shimming though.

Here is the link to our Murray target trigger sear & spring kit, they will fix most negative or neutral engagement issues as well, HERE.
options would be Tech or Mojo peep sights, paired with the Tech thin front target post
Optics would be the Wartak optic rail, these are the best way to mount optics we have seen yet, optics? Take your pick, HERE.
Hope that helps, we have the largest selection of SKS accessories all at one place!

Does the Murray kit still work with mil-surp primers? Looks like something I would love to have..

CHECK OUT the murry firing pin spring video on U TUBE BEFORE you spend your money!!!!!!!! keeping the firing pin and channel clean works wonders!!!

Just keep in mind even the BEST '55/56 tula letter gun /refurb. is as good as it gets AND its still only a $200 + - RIFLE. IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!!!!!
I love my 2 SKS RIFLES but a little of my wifes florescent green nail polish and mfs soft points are as much as I am investing in those Russian babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
