Interesting classification, doesn't that pretty much nerf the 1x red dots as a competitive 3-Gun optic? Depending on the stage design, of course... But you gotta draw the lines somewhere, might as well be there I guess. I'm all irons this season, so I don't have a horse in that race. Still, I wouldn't want a bunch of guys showing up with 1x dots and being surprised that their setup has them competing against magnified optics, so it's good we're talking about it here.

Suggest you allow "fixed magnifiers" as a single optic: A guy could zip tie the magnifier mount in position for the match, yes? Or is that too problematic to monitor? But agreed, if the magnifier is on/off, it would obviously count as multiple.

I will all come down to stage design like you say. If there are an equal mix of true CQB based engagements then it helps close the gap between the 1x group and the variable group. In the end though, I plan on shooting what I like, and could care less if I have to shoot next to a Trjiji 1-4 or Elcan. There was no issue last year with the long range plates and the Aimpoint though!

I think your assessment may be backwards. Magified and non-mag optics both have their positives and negatives. IMO, they will balance out over the day's stages, if not favour the RDS.

RDS are faster closer in or on the move, especially on that first shot. I'm consistently slower from low ready with my 1-4x than with my RDS. Magnification makes it easier to place shots more accurately at longer distances or on smaller targets, but not so much better than the RDS. Remember, we shot to 300m last year and the guys who were prepared had zero issues making hits with RDS.

Honestly, I think for most circumstances, and at the ranges we deal with in the Peace Country, a good shooter will be faster with the RDS. The scope shooter may end up with less points down, but I think they're more likely to be slower at the same time.

As long as someone using a magnifier leaves it up all day, I'd treat it the same as a fixed power scope. Otherwise, Open.

Yeah, I think you are bang on Stevo. That was my feeling last year. I knew my ballistics and was able to make nearly perfect hits on the steel, and my target to target transitions were quick. If someone were to get nasty though and shrink those targets r cover with a no shoot, a guy with a RDS could be in for a world of hurt though!

I'd never set hardcover or use no shoots past 100m. Remember who lays out the stages, if I can't make the shot with my crappy old eyes and an iron-sighted M14, it won't appear in the match!;)

And that reminds me, we've got some new steel this year. 12" hanging plates to avoid reset issues, and 8" or 6" circles on stands. I'm pretty sure I can hit those plates at 200 (or farther) with my M14...............

The more people post here the more excited I get about going to the Peace country again! Can't wait to see your layout Steveo! I plan on running same gear I ran for Earl's course with the addition of a Winchester defender shotty.

I know, I think Stevo should set up a team match every month!!!!! We could all vote on it! 6 inch circles at 200m you say, me thinks some range time is in order!

Nice. Just make sure you have a fresh battery, eh!

LOL. I'd have to exercise my veto if you take that vote!

No need to worry about 6" targets at that distance. I don't intend at his point to use them past 50m as they do need to be manually reset. You may see the 12" plates as far as 200m, but probably closer. I do usually make the team stages a bit tougher, though.;)

Never thought about it much, tbh, since I am many many moons away from being able to afford a reasonable variable optic. Was just surprised to see it - I made my 300m shots last year with a 1x red dot, but I would have been faster on that particular stage with a magnified optic, for sure. As has been said, pro/con to magnified optics will be decided by stage design.

Regardless, as long as the division rules are clear and common knowledge, I don't think there will be any complaints.

Fair call on allowing magnifiers as "single optic" if left "on" all day.

You, sir, have just made my day. And a couple more days in October... :D

Guys on CGN and the those who shoot in July should have a better understanding. No doubt there will be some surprises, though. Surprisingly, very few folks ever contact me, outside of those on CGN, for more info before matches.

I imagine a few might get bumped to Open, but that's about it. I hope we don't need a complaint department.

I'm in Wayne, can't wait to see what the boys dream up!

Just have to confirm with Johnny but "same time next year?" in the truck on the drive home last fall was a no-brainer... I'm sure we'll be there. As far as 1 day or 2, whatever makes it most feasible for others to be able to attend and for the Peace River crew to keep their sanity while attempting to set this up. Props to you guys.

Love the job you guys do and always appreciate all the time and energy you guys put in to organizing these events. I agree there's no place for bellyaching when there's this much fun to be had.

Very intriguing. I've never participated in a match of this type but have always been interested. All I have that is remotely suitable is a Springfield Nat'l Match and Glock 21C in 45 ACP, but no semi or pump shotgun. Any recommendations on a shotgun?

Pretty much anything will do to get your feet wet. Not having a shotgun is no problem. There's always lots of extra gear and guys willing to lend it out. I think i outfitted 2 1/2 teams last October

Your M1A and Glock will work just fine as long as your have a decent holster. You can jam all your mags and shells in your pockets. At the very least, come out and watch.

Ok good to know. I'm not sure if I can make it yet (Still waiting for my summer work schedule) but I'm looking at suitable pump shotguns to complete my 3 gun inventory. I was looking at the division rules and was wondering what the majority, if any, of people tend to fall under. I guess I'd fall under the heavy metal considering I'd be shooting 45/308/12. If one had upgraded iron sights, ie. not stock, would that still qualify in stock devision or would you be considered in open devision?

If I'm going to make the drive all the way to Peace River I will definitely be participating. It's a hell of a drive to only watch! I have a holster for my Glock that is secure. Not sure if it is "suitable" as you say.

I would say that most would fall into Pro-Stock, due to having an optic of some sort on their rifle. It's only a guess, but I'd say Open would be second most, followed by Stock and Heavy Metal.

Upgrading your iron sights wouldn't have any effect on classification. You would actually fall into Open due your pistol being compensated. If your holster will retain your pistol during moderate physical activity doesn't require 3 hands to get your pistol out it will work.

Where are you coming from?

That's a long haul. I know at least a couple guys are coming from Calgary for the team match, not sure about July.

You should check out WRAS events in Spruce Grove, too. They put on great events.
