New unfired M1A!!

I took my standard M1a walnut to the range today. I was just shooing irons and it is MUCH more accurate than my accurized m305 w/ 1-4x scope (ARMS #18 with #22 rings) purchased off another member. It was even taken to an m14 clinic. Upgrades include NM spring guide, bedded stock, unitized gas system. I think at best it is a 3 MOA rifle...maybe its time for another SAI. I only added a Sadlak NM spring guide to the m1a.

2 shots @ 100 with cheap American Eagle 308 150gr FMJ

Beuty rifle Blaster!
do I smell a 1.5 MOA qualifier?!

Haha, Not one picture of it assembled; I love it!
Nice rifle!

Check out my Avatar... It's another M 14 clone, disassembled, can't remember which one though but I think it was my buddies M1A loaded. (I think he was a little nervous when I sent him the picture!) I like taking things apart, just takes time to reassemle as I have to check out each part before it goes back on. Have to get it assembled before the weekend though so I can check it out on the range!

Nice rifle Rod. While you've likley got this all covered, I've been finding 40.5 4895 pushing a 168 pill to be a good load to work from.

Oh, btw ignore the miserable comments - some folks are just jealous.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Bob,
I bought 8 pouds of H4895 a while ago and some 168 grain Hornady match so will have to give that a try. Going to try IMR 3031first though if I can persuade myself to do some loading tonight or tomorrow, guess I'll have to get my butt in gear and put the gun back together too!!

This is what it looked like before I got my grubby paws on it, hopefully once it is reassembled it will look like that again????

Well boys I was just shocked when I got mine.

I zeroed it with 7 shots at 100 yards. (I got in chit from a green bean M14 Marine because he figured I should have been able to do it with two - but I insist on three shot groups. It's a little windier on the range when I shoot if ya catch my drift). After that it's all up to you, my friend. Mine shoots 2" groups with whatever I feed it, the recoil is a mere gentle bump. About the only beef I have is the thing beats the crap out of its brass! I even got a case head separation once - but the gun just gobbed out the pieces and kept on shooting!

I got rid of my scoped deer guns - I am taking the Springfield hunting this year and if I have to pass up a 300 yard shot...oh well, one of you younger punks with sharper eyes and steadier nerves can take up where I leave off! Any bucks within 200 yards though, are in very grave danger! Good luck Rod!

Interested to see a range report with a few different types of ammo...I know it's been done, but I like to see as many personal experiences as I can!

Congrats, I totally understand your excitement. The "Fondle Factor" is quite high with this one.

Hi All,
Put the rifle back together so I can play tomorrow!IMG_20140516_171501.jpgIMG_20140516_171412.jpg

Constructive critisizm is always welcome ... what is this?

Rodney

He changed the original title of the thread.

He originally posted as "brand new M1A falls apart."

Wanted to see his defective rifle or if he put it in the dishwasher.

Turns out his gun didn't "fall apart" at all. Misleading title. Thread did not deliver.

Range reports a must.. everything else well you know..

Range reports a must.. everything else well you know..

Just got back from the range, 13 degrees, over cast and "twitchy wind"

Nice rifle, not a fan of the plastic stock though but I knew that when I bought it so no big deal, very nice trigger! Function was flawless and smooooooth!! This thing REALLY pings.

I reloaded 50 rounds of IMR 3031 from 39.3 to 40.3 grains with Hornady 168 grain match bullets.
Can't comment on the first 3 powder loads as it took 15 rounds to get the sights adjusted.
Groups from 3.288 to 1.332 after that.
This rifle appears to like 40.3 grains of IMR 3031. Either that or the last group was a fluke!!

Pictures are of the best 3 groups of course! This is the first time with any of my open sight rifles that I have had these kind of results so very pleased. Will shoot it for a while longer with irons but having a hard time talking myself out of scoping it to see just what it can do!!!

Scope it. Its already a fine shooter, so why not tighten up those groups.
1.332 with irons is phenomenal, probably go sub MOA with a scope.
Well done.
