358 Winchester - too much for whitetail deer?

Is it tough to find 358 brass? Does everyone just neck up 308 brass? How about bullets, easy to find?

Brass and bullets are not that hard to find, I've got hundreds of new Hornady and Winchester brass just from making a few phone calls.

If anyones looking for a rifle in 358, the local shop here in Cranbrook,BC has a new stainless laminate BLR w/pistol grip on their wall.
Over $1200.00 though.

I'd grab it myself but I'm not a fan of pistol gripped BLR's.

How 'bout sum detales?
Start with the hertfulllll..........$$$?
Bevan King made and installed the bbl. Stock blank was a Wildcat. Bolt bling and stock work done a person who wishes to remain anonymous.

I don't add up costs when getting a rifle built. #1 is that I don't want to know the total, #2 is that I can't remember anyways. :)

I don't have a 358win, but I recently obtained a minty model 94 big bore in 356win. I couldn't locate any of the Speer 220gr flat points, but it seems to like the Speer 180gr bullets. I made a lot of calls, and sent a lot of e-mails, to locate 150 cases.

I also have a 356 Winchester that I have not yet fired. I understand that it's virtually identical to the 358. Mine is one of those Marlin 336ERs. I picked up 5 boxes of factory ammo and 50 empty cases for it.

I'm not even a 358 fan but that 99 could change my mind.

Not sure why Paul built an ultralight mountain rifle so that he can hunt deer the size of a large dog in this tangly crap country out here.

Not to worry ..... It may replace my 375CT if I am happy with it and be about 2.5 lbs lighter for the task.

We get deer in the 180 - 200 lb range here so thems a bit bigger than the ones in TX. You'll be deer hunting soon wishing for moose where you are too. :dancingbanana:

I like the 358 so much I own and reload for two!

Both are from 1977...

Savage 99 Brush Gun in 358
Browning BLR in 358
The Outsider - did you rebore or rebarrel a 308 to get that 358 in a straight stock 99 - or is that a factory made 358Win??? SUCH a nice set up either way. I want too.

AS said here already by others, I especially like the Savage brush 99s - I recently got my first 99 - a similar saddle ring carbine model in a 20" barrel thutty thutty and am shooting/hunting it now - wish it were 358. I'm thinking of making it a 350 Maine Guide with a rebore/rechamber- except the the darn bore and chamber are excellent - will never be shot out in what's left of my days. A Lyman 1a tang sight is in the mail now for it.

Still waiting to see that one - some Friday evening - let me know.

I see one every now and then, usually for around $1500.00.
Yep - a big 10-4 on that. Seen $1200 asked for even a crap condition regular 99 rifle version in 358.

In my longish life so far I only ever handled two Sav99s in 358 I could actually purchase. Both were the NOT the brush gun so I passed (both were sold to someone else within 24 hours just the same). Because of scarcity - and I'm not going to live long enough to find one - I figured now I would have to make/modify one from another carbine - probably a 308. However just an idea I probably won't run with.

Nice shooting', but why the 180s unless you're using it for blasting groundhogs.

Thems varmint bullets, boy, but they do go well with that varmint scope.

Bawt them at a gun show.
Have 250's too.
Wanted to see how the BLR did with different weight bullets and between
the 180's, 200's and 250's, the only thing that changed was elevation.
I'm duly impressed with this gal.
The wifey would lose on this deal.

very nice rifle looky, really love the brand of scope, look'et that nice slim trim sleek eye pc, where else ya gonna find that? And it's great not to see Weaver rings on it!:D

Have you actually tried the Speer 180s on big game? Talking with a few people that have used them on deer, they are telling me that the 180s are holding together quite well at 356win/358win velocities.

I heard that! :)

Lately, I've been using the newer style Weaver detachable top mount ring called "Sure Grip". I like them over the old style Weaver ring as they have screws on both sides of the top strap instead of the hook on one side and screws on the other. They are easier to get a scope properly aligned and don't seem to pinch a scope like the old ones did. Still are lightweight, strong and offer QD option.
