Bucks only in Manitoba for 2014

Well, according to a Wednesday Winnipeg Free Press article, there will be a deer season this year in Manitoba with one buck only. They were seriously considering closing it all together. Just a heads up.

I can't speak for anyone else... but I can not ever recall lower numbers. As much as I hate it, and our family will feel the pinch not having a full freezer, I think this is a good thing! It may take 4-5 years to have the number recover.

not that I can remember, but I am experiencing some memory loss in my old age. Anyone else remember?
I do remember a number of years not that long ago with very few sightings of deer during the hunting seasons. I just assumed they went to smart school and learned to stay hidden during hunting seasons. After hunting seasons closed, they were all over the place.

That's the problem. Some areas have low numbers but other areas (where I hunt) I have never seen so many deer. I have been doing some scouting(southern MB) and have seen a ton of deer and they all look heathy. How does the government get the numbers to make these decisions?

I wager its how many deer get hit in Winnipeg that determine the numbers ha:
 
I know in my area, my neighbour and I roughly counted close to a 100 deer in a couple different fields. They all look healthy. Then you hear of other places where they hardly see any deer. I wonder if Natural resources do an average count over the province, and come up with a magic number for the population.
 
Strange.... Was driving for 4 hours this weekend and counted over 300 deer. A couple of fields had over 30 deer each. We counted 6 dead deer on the side of the road. I checked my trail cams (4 on 80 acres) and had a very healthy display of deer. If anyone wants to convince me that the MNR actually knows what they are talking about I am all ears. I am still completely convinced that they only read the little cards that they send out to hunters and make their decisions based on them and word of mouth.

Still can't believe the idiots in Manitoba continue to vote NDP.

On a side note we also saw a bunch of rabbits on the road. We haven't seen rabbits on the road in many years. Perhaps the wolf/coyote population might be on the decline?

I know that our deer numbers are down in the Swan Valley region but I think they are a lot closer to where they should be as there were a lot of deer running around. This last winter was not hard on them at all as we had really nothing for snow and coyote numbers are way down as well.
Now if we are talking about the Duck Mountains and Porcupine Forest areas the deer could use some help. There they have to deal with cougars and wolves.
Not a big deal to me to make it a bucks only season as I don't really need to shoot a deer for meat as I should be drawn for elk to fill the freezer so If I can't find a mature buck I will let the rest walk this year.

Funny thing is that of all the people I know and talk to only one guy will admit that he votes NDP. He is a native who works for the government and has received enough grants over the years to start different business that he would be foolish not to. When you hear how this government has wasted 100`s of millions of dollars you have to wonder why anyone would vote for them.

Also what is the issue if the season were closed for a year or 2?

What is the issue if the season were not closed but no rifle season for a year?

I am sure there are more armchair hunters than traditional hunters. How many hunters out there are going to admit that they do not use a sort of bait in MB?

There may be areas that have the numbers but there are areas where the population looks low. Maybe it is my turn to search out these populous areas and move my camp east.

In regards to the Natural resources staffing there is next to NO feet on the ground in Westman. There is at most 2 people stationed in each of Boisevain, Carberry, Neepawa, Shoal Lake. These are the places that I know of that actually patrol. So we can't be hard on them. They do what they can with what they have.

The NDP spend crazy amounts of money on useless things. They then realize that the province is in the hole. And finally they cut money to useful things. The Conservatives typically don't tend to do things so idiotic.

The issue of having the season closed would be an overpopulation in some areas. Disease runs more rampant, more deer are killed on roads(MPI rates go up), etc.

There is no issue with having it closed for rifle season. It's a brilliant idea. Getting rid of a lot of road hunters while still giving the option to serious hunters who hunt "properly". I would be thrilled if they would have taken it down to only archery, however muzzleloader would weed out some of the laziest hunters.

You can't completely let Natural Resources off the hook. I used to work for them. I have never seen laziness, political infighting, and extreme clusterphucking on a whole as I did with them.
 
Doesn't Manitoba have some of the harshest truck hunting laws in canada already?
We had a discussion about using your pickup for an elevated position shooting gophers on reddit, the Manitoba guys have some links about Manitobans laws that were just unbelievably draconian about vehicles/atv's and firearms.
