How did they end up coming out?

Well, my good friend Machman came over and helped me.
The 1st screw loosened by tapping on it strongly and then using a #4 Allen tipped-socket bit in a rachet wrench.
Machman explains the successful approach on the 2nd screw:

For those who might want to know how, we were able to remove the worst one by driving a Torx™ head bit into the rounded out Allen™head bolt.
