M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

Cripes!!! can't even match Lycans results with 32 power Bushnell scope!! Oh well Norinco 14S will have to do for now!
Had a great day at the range today. I'm definately chasing the OP now. (Hi Paul)
25 rounds of Berger VLD 155 grain 5 round groups averaged 1.5956, largest group was 1.949, the smallest group was 1.364
25 rounds of Hornady match 168 grain 5 round groups averaged 1.734, largest group was 1.962, the smallest group was 1.368

Shot myself in the foot (so to speak) tried my theory of following the first shot each time with all subsequent shots, some groups were better, some worse! Didn't record which was which so will have to do it all over again.... oh no... another grueling day at the range coming up!!

you need at least a 50 power scope

or just buy a Springfield loaded and save the cost of buying another scope? Was considering that but this damn 14s is so much fun to tinker with I think I will just keep spending money on it for a while longer. One of the benifits is most of what Ihave bought so far will fit an M1A anyhow!
I have installed a Blackfeather stock on a friends M1A loaded as well as my Norinco as his action was loose in the factory wood stock. He is getting almost as good groups with surplus ammo as I am with handloads.
Anyone with M1A standard rifle trying the challenge? Would be interesting to see the actual difference between a standard and a loaded M1A

I believe the major different between standard and loaded is the NM sight, NM barrel and trigger group. It was two hundred dollars different between two when I brought my loaded. It was a well worth upgrade.
I ordered the front aperture sight set last night and will attempt the challenge again when its here. Looking forward to hit some target out to 300m with iron.

I believe they have the same twist rate but in different profile. Can't really tell the different in MOA.
I only shot the standard once.

Kelvin

Sorry...I meant you need at least a 100 power scope

You a funny guy :) ......... where do I find a scope mount for my spotting scope and a cheek piece to match??
I don't see too many people posting attempts at this challenge, too bad as it is fun to try with whatever you got and the challenge is not just for the rifle but the shooter as well.

Thought I'd post my latest failure to bump this thread. I'm actually pretty happy with the day since I've been having some recent difficulties with my rifle making it group unreliably. This is the first time in 3 or 4 shoots where I'm getting something close to what I used to.

Anyway..gorgeous day and I finally have some IMR3031 which has been the best performing powder for my rifle. Started shooting with my standard load but after 50 rounds had nothing close to being eligible for the challenge. Then I switched to my 3031 loads and first group...whatdya know...pretty nice. Second, not bad. Stopped to chat and cool the barrel a little. Third - first round a little high, on the edge of the target..so I chase the group and hold a little high..damn...2nd and 3rd shots go even higher and my challenge is shot. Shot the last two groups anyway and they weren't bad.

Nice try. Even tho the attempt was a fail, that is still shooting way above average groups, and out of a Norc too hehe . Who woulda thought it possible eh LOL.
I haven't forgot about the challenge and will be going for it, but the Gods have decided to play F&^K around with me this last few weeks, still waiting for me 168's to turn up, the roads are flooded, dogs sick, car f^&%$ed up, extra shifts at work... and it goes on... LOL

Did you ever adjust the tension on your gas block ? Maybe that has something to do with the groups opening up some.
Damn fine shooting any way you look at it.
Cheers.

Hey Paul,
Just calculated my groups from today, you still have me beat but I'm breathing down your kneck now. (I hope) Biggest group 2.042, smallest .752
Average group size 1.55 for 9-five shot groups with 2 groups under 1 inch. (one might be a fluke but 2 tells me I must be one lucky SOB)
Interesting part is that the 2 groups are within .2 grains of each other. Will be going back Monday with more of the same loads to see if I can at least come close to duplicating this!

Been working on my rifle lately and here's my failed attempt.
Needs a bedding job, but specs are:

-Early import Norinco "M14 Sporter". No numbers below stock line, only a "C06848" on left side.
-Head space is right at 1.630",
-Bolt is lapped,
-CASM aluminum mount
-Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10X50.
-Trigger breaks crisply at 5lbs,
-Gas system tightened and shimmed,
-Flash hider tightened and no bullet strike marks.
-Unknown barrel manufacturer, completely void of any markings, I'm sure its Norinco, but doesn't even have a caliber stamp.

Last group made it, but all others had a flyer to stretch em out. I really need a cheek riser!
Those are 1" squares.

Thanks for posting. I think I see some stringing in your groups. Have you tried making a few warm-up shots to get the barrel to operating temperature before shooting for effect? Even after a brief cool down period I tend to put the first 2 or 3 shots high, then the rifle settles to a more consistent POI.

Nice try.
Your groups look like mine used to.
A bit of stringing when cold, and after about 15 warm up rounds things tighten up.
Would have been nice to see another group after your last eh. My money says it would have been just as tight.
What ammo were you using.?

Sorry, forgot to post my load!

-Hornady 168gr BTHP
-42.6gr H4895
-Federal brass
-Federal Gold Medal match primers.

This is not a worked up load, I merely set my powder measure to get 42.5gr and this was close enough at 1am the day before going out.

Thanks for the tips guys!
I actually did do a barrel warm up group on a separate target, and that was shot 5-10mins after shooting 20 rounds for warm up and fun.
I only waited about 1 minute in between each group and the barrel was definitely warm each time, almost too warm to the touch.

I do know that my gun just drops into my stock. My next fix will be to bed it, and put a decent draw pressure up front. I also need to stiffen the for-end as its a bit nooddely!

OK so I'm pretty sure this challenge has put me close to the cost of the original rifle as far as ammo costs go... AND STILL the damn fliers are making me crazy.....er?
Anyway went back to the range today with the 2 loads that did under one inch on Saturday, sure enough lightning will not strike twice!
Even so my average group size has been shrinking slowly over the last 3 or 4 months so I think I am on the right track.Out of 10 groups I had 4 under 1.5 but 4 over 2 inches so back to the reloading bench and crack open another pound of powder and another box of bullets!

Missed the challenge by .068 inches!!!
Man I thought I had it done, nice day light wind groups looked promising came home, measured groups..... crap!
Smallest group .860, largestgroup 1.568, (average 1.188)
The Norinco is showing promise with the IMR3031 it has been more consistant for me than the other powders, not the smallest group ever but the most consistent small groups. Picture of my latest attemptIMG_20140524_165534.jpg
