they are not listed on the gouv. website as Small Game, are they legal to kill or not?
am talking about real hunting, can you kill them, how many, need a orange vest or not, and the like.

would be great if someone would link me to the list of illegal things like owls and black squirels.

searched and found nothing, before deleting the thread at leats PM me...

It might vary from province to province so best to check with your local Natural Resources office. Most of the game listed you would need a trappers lisence. The only thing I can think if here in Manitoba is rabbit that can be taken year around with no lisence needed.

I'd stay away from any migratory bird, provincially/federally listed species of concern, birds of prey, reptiles/amphibians, any mammal with trapping regulations attached to it. I almost always have orange with me when I am anywhere near a gun/bow in Ontario depending on seasons just to be safe. The species listed with no limits or seasons are obviously fair game, so have at 'er.

Have fun doing some reading, and remember, Google is your friend!

Red squirrel and beaver are fur bearing they require a trapping license. (In Ontario anyway) Porcupine are a nuisance IMO.

don't need a trappers license for squirrel just need to do something with the fur from fur bearing game only need a trapping license if you are trapping them(you can use wire snares with a small game tag btw)

Wrong
Red squirrels are listed as fur bearing animals in Ontario and may not be hunted except under the authority of a Trapping Licence. The only furbearers that may be hunted with a hunting licence are raccoon, red and arctic fox, skunk, weasel, opossum wolf and coyote. See page 82 and 86 of the 2014 hunting regulation summary.

My guess is you are only allowed to shoot what the licence has listed on it and nothing else , check with your provincial conservation oficers.

You probably just missed a comma there but if you guys have a critter called the opossum wolf I'd like to hear more about it. Plays dead to entice prey within range? Rat-like tail? Unearthly shriek instead of a howl?

re-read your regulations page 82 of the summery specifically states that "You may only hunt the furbearing mammals (see Definitions, page 86) listed in the table below under the authority of your small game licence." The table below includes red squirrels. There is no mention of needing a trapping licence for the red's

I have it right in front of me. No, it does not list red squirrels. Red fox, yes, red squirrels, no.

Red squirrels are protected. Habitat removal and competition almost wiped them out in the 70's. You can still shoot pest ones but hunting them is a strict no

Sounds like it would be ugly as hell.

But re reading it again, I might be wrong.

You are wrong, red squirrels are protected animals in Ontario. Same as chipmunks

5. Small Game
a)Resident’s licence tag to hunt small game $24.59

This licence tag is valid for a resident to hunt game birds (other
than wild turkey) and game mammals (except black bear,
caribou, deer, elk and moose). Under this licence tag you may
hunt fox, game birds (except wild turkey), rabbits and hares
in most areas, raccoons (though not at night), wolf, coyote,
and black, gray and fox squirrels (but not red squirrels), skunk,
opossum, and weasel. A small game licence tag also permits
you to hunt American crow, brown-headed cowbird, common
grackle, house sparrow, red-winged blackbird or starlings
and other animals not scheduled under the
Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Act, 1997
(e.g., groundhogs)
**
. You may also hunt
on game bird hunting preserves with this licence. This licence is
not valid in northern Ontario and part of central Ontario from
June 16 to August 31, except for hunting by falconry and hunting
game birds on a game bird hunting preserve (see Map 2, pages 10
to 11, for more details).

^ Can I state that I have an absolute hatred of those cute little bastards known as chipmunks.
Are they shootable as a nuisance animal? So far they have made a mess of:
My attick, how they repeatedly get in there I have no idea.
My lawn mower (nesting and wiring chewing worse then mice
My lawn (why do they refuse to live in trees like normal squirrels and insist on digging tunnels in my lawn?).
My vehicles (again, nest building).

I have ended up shooting some "curiously patterned red squirrels" as nuisance animals but would like to know if I am within my right to shoot chipmunks as well.

don't forget about wild boar, no tags required, no bag limits............

You need to look at more than your Provincial hunting regs. You need to look at the Species At Risk Act and The Endangered Species Act et all too.
Any time you're hunting you must be licenced. Not all animals have a hunting season though. Ground hogs, for example, have no closed season in Ontario, but some of their cousins in B.C. are protected.
Isn't the opossum wolf a cousin of big foot that howls and hangs around in trees?
