Ipsc sr1911?

The Ruger is a perfectly suitable gun for IPSC classic division.I used mine for that division last season and it worked very well for me.I changed a few things on it including putting on fiberoptic sights,adding a mag well,extended mag release and a full length guide rod,but otherwise it was pretty much stock.I put a total of about 10k of rounds through it over the season and had I think 2 malfunctions(and never in a match!),so very happy with it.

They are very solid 1911s but if you are thinking of getting one,try to examine it beforehand as the Rugers I have seen can range from being real rattle traps to reasonably nice and tight.
 
I have seen a few at matches. Most people change the front sight before it snaps off (common problem with them). A mag well helps mag changes other than that you are good to go.
 
Thanks for your comments. I've had an SR1911 for a while and have found it both extremely reliable and surprisingly accurate in range use -- but have never seen one in IPSC Classic action in my Ontario area. Guess I should be the first! Already have a mag well onboard, and agree that a fiber optic front sight would be a big benefit, especially if the stock front sight is fragile. Any particular choice in extended mag release?

don't spend to much on an extended mag release, with a nice high grip I trigger them or they dig pretty deep into my hand when shooting so I only advocate using one if you cant hit the stock one. And try the grips with the thumb cutout (vz) before an extended release.

can also be a liability on table starts
 
Good points. Thanks. Do you see need for an ambi safety? (I'm currently running an S&W M&P in Production, so don't have to mess with manual safeties...)

I had one put on my gun, I don't think ive used it in my match yet though. Its not a must since you can disengage the safety before you transfer the gun to your weak hand, but my gun was at the smith anyways and I prefer the transfer method that requires you to have one (grab the bottom of the grip with your string hand off the draw, then transfer the gun, safety comes off like your normally when you grab it with your weak hand)

What fiber optic sight are you using and where did you get it, if you don't mind me asking?
 
Its a Dawson precision .200 tall sight specifically made for the Ruger.A friend in the club had a spare that he sold to me.Unfortunately Dawson products are hard to get in Canada as they wont ship here and places like Brownells dont seem to readily stock these sights.I had tried a Novak sight made for the Ruger but didnt like it as the fibreoptic dot was too large and made it hard for fine alignment of the sights which I why I like the Dawsons as they have a fine .04 fibre which is plenty bright enough but doesnt wash out the sights.
 
Yeah the ruger sr1911 is a cool place to start for classic!
If i we're to go back, i would of got that instead (or any budget 1911)of the cz shadow and go to classic sooner.
