Ruger american .22lr?

Im looking for a new bolt action .22 and the ruger american stood out from the pack. It has alot of features that look good on paper
-takes 10/22 mags so 110 round drum is a posibiility
-knock off accutrigger
-aluminum beded stock
- d&t for weaver bases and has 3/8 dovetail
-all that for arround 320$

But is it as good as it seems? There aren't many review out there it seems so what are your thoughs on the gun?

I picked the .22 Mag version, and I really am impressed by it.....a lot of thought went into these rifles and Ruger is obviously taking the rimfire bolt market very seriously.

I will be getting a standard .22 in 22" when I can find one.
 
I am thinking of one of these too. To play devil's advocate the only downside I can see at this time is:

1. No stainless or heavy barrel options at this time, but I could see it a thing in the future.
2. The compact has a short LOP and Ruger says you can buy longer stocks, but no one can get them.
3. The finish has been reported to come off easily on some faying surfaces.
4. The magwell is very tight. The stock 10rd Ruger mag and ultra evil Ruger BX-25 will fit but after market mags like Butler Creek will not. One could open up the well or sand down the mags, but what a PITA.
5. The stock feels a bit cheep, but if one wanted to, I believe Boydes already has a stock for it.
6. The bolt release has been reported to stick alowing the bolt to travel too fat back and possibly remove from the reciever on rearward stroke.

To be fair the things I am atracted to are:

1. The potential for hi cap mags.
2. Good tight action reportedly showing great accuracy.
3. Hi comb cheek rest.
4. Tang safety location.
5. Low bolt handle angle for clearing scopes like a Tikka.
6. Nice large mag release leaver.

The only thing holding me back is I am waiting to see if anyone has reliable success with Butler Creek mags in them. I am sitting on some of these mags and want this rifle if I can use these mags with more reliability than say my 10/22.

I purchased a ruger american rimfire 4 months ago from reliable in Vancouver. I mainly got it because I have the ruger american in 308win and wanted something with similiar trigger, safety and weight to practice with.

For the price I am impressed with the rifle for the family.

Changing the combs is a nice feature for shooting iron sights and really nice cheek contact for using the scope.

It was easy to order a shorter LOP stock insert, took 1 month for delivery got it from

Shorter LOP insert is great for the kids.

I also like the flush magazine compared to my friends savage which sticks out the bottom. Have not tried high capacity magazines in it.

The only thing I would change is the magazine release, seems to stick out too far and wonder why they did this as would be nice to have flush with the stock like the 10/22.

I have the longer barrel but in hindsight probably would of got shorter barrel and ordered longer lop stock insert if I knew they were easy to get.

great rifle feels very solid.
 
I've had one for 5 months now, in 22lr. With a tasco scope and a bipod, it has quickly become my favorite 22. The Butler Creek mags are tight, so you may have to fiddle/file a bit to get them to work right. I also have a 10/22 that came used with a speed loader, so it's easy to move between the 2 guns. For the money, you can't go wrong.

Glad to see you can get the inserts now. Thanks for the heads up. With that knowledge I would do what you suggested. Compact with long insert. The mag relese should be standard 10/22. Therefore if you can get your hands on an older style 10/22 mag release your good to go with a flush mag release.

you found it heavy?
hmm, im gonna go throw my savage and my ruger both on the scale and see what the difference is cause i found it pretty light.

back in a bit with the results.
 
Ruger rimfire American with rings and scope = 6lbs 14
Savage MKII with rings and scope = 8lbs 4
Ruger 10/22 with wood stock no scope = 5lbs 8
Ruger 10/22 with hogue stock no scope = 4 lbs 15
 
I have a ruger m77 22 and I tell u ruger is hands down the best 22 for the money on the market I have shot more grouse with that rifle than all my other rim fires combined it is my go to gun for grouse
