Scope the 4570 Guide Gun or buy a .308 bolt action

I am getting prepped to start hunting again FINALLY! I have a scoped Remington 788 in .243 for deer and coyotes but its a little light for moose and elk. I already have a Marlin 4570 SS Guide Gun that I use mainly for back country protection and moose. I am hoping to get an elk this year and I'd like a scoped rifle when I go. A .308 of 30-06 would cover me off but I am wondering if I should just scope my 45-70 and use it? I like my open sights for the way I use the 45-70 now so I would likely end up removing the scope from time to time. I really like the look of the Marlin X7 bolt rifles and they aren't that expensive, but a good scope and mount for the 45-70 could be a good option. Any thoughts?
 
I'm up in Northeastern BC, Fort St. John. Mix of wide open spaces, dense bush, river valleys, and access to the Rockies about 1.5 hours away. I will probably end up using the rifle in all these places over time.
 
Keep the 45/70 unscoped, you blasphemous monster.

:) I'd buy a Ruger Scout rifle and put a low power variable or fixed 4x on it. You should be able to take a moose to 300+ no problem.
 
I have a 1895GS as well, and even though I mostly keep it an "irons gun", I have a weaver base that I occasionally use with a Luepold VX-2 2-7x33 in quick release mounts. With the scope off you still easily use the irons with the base and I think it's an awesome set up.

Off course, if you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle then I would not be one to stop you. If you are worried about the range load up some Hornady 350gr to 1800-1900 fps and you have a 200 yard elk gun. If you want more range than that, go 30-06 or 300WM.
 
Yup, a 30-06, as boring as it is, will serve you well in that country. Since you don't appear to have a giant larder of firearms I would suggest buying yourself a nice 30-06 rather than buying a cheaper model. This has no bearing on the rifle's ability to fill the freezer, but I'm starting to get to the point where I'd rather have a few very nice firearms than a closet full of lesser ones.

Now, we'll see how well I hold to that theory when it gets put into practice...I may find that I've been talking out of my @ss.
 
I would leave the 45-70 as is with the iron sights and go buy a 30-06. The reason I say 30-06 over the 308 is because of the game you intend to hunt. I know the 308 will cleanly kill moose and elk no problem, but if you want to shoot heavier than 180gr bullets the longer case of the 30-06 can handle them alot easier than the shorter 308.

Also I agree with BigUglyMan,..I think I would buy a bit higher grade rifle,...it does'nt have to break the bank, ..something like a Browning X-Bolt Stalker would be a good choice.

A scoped .30-06 sounds perfect for you. It gives you more range and versatility than your .45-70 and fills that gap between your .243 and .45-70 perfectly. Use your .243 for smaller critters .30-06 for general hunting and your .45-70 as the brush gun.

Although the Marlin will certainly be functional, why not get something a little nicer, that you can be proud of? Regardless a scoped .30-06 gives you more versatility than putting a scope on the .45-70.

I have a scoped 1895gs, I had to scope it because of vision problems, I put a fixed 2.5 power leupold on it and it works well. I also have a short ruger 308 with a 1-4 variable on it. I feel more comfortable making the longer shot with the 308 due to the holdover differences. Both rifles are equally handy and the 4570 is hands down the king of the shorter range for me

you re not the first one telling that story but in reality if the safes can talk lol ....
 
I use the Hornady factory 325 grain FTX ammo in my Guide Gun.
It's topped by a top quality 2-7x Leupold scope.
I installed the trigger happy kit by Wild West Guns and now have a crisp 2.5 pound trigger pull.
This gun and ammo combo are deadly accurate to 300 yards which is all I need where I hunt.
 
2 moose (bull + cow) down since I bought the rifle in 2011.
The bull shot at 210 yards (Bushnell range finder) at the edge of a clearing in Elk Lake, Ontario (near New Liskeard).
The 325 grain FTX bullet literally destroyed the lungs and the animal dropped less than 10 yards from the point of impact.
Don't know why I'd need another rifle.
I'm hunting moose in Northern Ontario not pronghorns or mountain sheep at 400 yards in Alberta.
 
I have a 45-70 and I like it. Decided I needed another short, handy truck gun. Bought a ruger scout a few weeks back. I like it too. Come to think of it, I like all my guns. I just can't stop buying them.
