Question about my 114 year ld winchester model 1894.

Hey all,
So I am trying to sight in my 1894 at 25 yards and although it really does group well, I cant seem to get it to move right. Im 5-6 inches left on the target in zero wind with 170 gr Remmy ammo. and generally the same area with the federal, althought I cant remember the load. I blew about forty rounds downrange and had little to no change in where Im hitting. Since I wanna take it out for atleast one deer hunt I need I figure it should be more accurate then that. I was tapping the rear sight left in order to shift my point of aim. Was I backwards? Any advice on how to get this thing shooting? Is a peep sight a good idea?

Yes ... you were going the wrong way. Rear sight: move it in the direction you want to go ... right for right, up for up. Front site: opposite to the way you want to go.

A good peep site is my preference. A Lyman or Marbles Tang peep for the 1894 works just great. If you want to go the Lyman Foolproof route, drilling & tapping is required.
As often as not, a lower front site may also be required.
 
Remember the acronym FORS when adjusting iron sights, in regards to the direction you want the bullet to go.

FORS ~ Front Opposite, Rear Same ~

Any idea where I can get a tang sight for it? I dont wanna drill and tap this old girl.

If your eyes are in decent shape, just use the original sights on the rifle. Tang sights just get in the way of your grip.:)

This is the key....scoping a lever is a no-no in some peoples eyes (pun intended) but my poor eyesight is now enjoying my levers with peeps..(Skinners, Williams) and a nice bright Firesight front.....

Which would of course include D & T......my bad,..should have read the entire thread

Fer my leverguns with short barrels, XS rear mounted apertures are the cat's ass. On 20" & longer tubed rifles, the open sights (Marbles) work fer me just fine. Sucks gettin' old and decrepit!:(

Tang sights are fine but you still may run into the windage problem. Then you have to drift the front sight left or right to compensate. I would just use the existing sights now that you know which way to adjust them. My 2 cents.
 
check the barrel crown , that's a lot of years of possible ram rod destruction of the crown - it was the common way to clean back then- easy to get "jetting" on one side of the bullet as it exits. difficult to fix but not impossible .cut/recrown

This may make me sound like a newb but what exactly is a XS rear mounted aperature? I know what an aperature sight is Im just wondering if XS is the company or what not. I could see the tang sight getting in the way of my grip actually now I think about it. I just know Im a solid shot with a peep compared to a rear open.

If the rifle is grouping really well, the crown doesn't need any work and the existing sights and shooter appear to be doing their job. There doesn't appear to be any need to go to more sophisticated sights.
 
There are modern repro tang sights made by Lyman and Marbles. If you want a high quality tang sight, try Montana Vintage Arms. I got tang sights on all my old Winchesters. No problem to adjust windage, just put a thin shim under one side of the tang sight and adjust accordingly.

If ur the guy who posted about shooting a deer with tang sights and a super old Winchester im pretty sure the reason I bought this gun lol. does montana vintage have a websight?

XS Sights is a manufacturer of peep sights for lever guns. Nice quality and easily mounted on rifles that are pre-drilled for scopes such as Marlins & Winchester angle eject models. Your rifle would require the sight that needs 2 holes drilled & tapped to mount it at the rear of the receiver. Shown here is one I installed on my M92 Rossi.
These sights are available through Brownells & are slick as snot to sight through. Not expensive either.:)
