My 87 year old father in law has a Sears & Roebuck Cooey Model 6c and isn't strong enough to pull the bolt back. The knob/bowel thingy doesn't stick out of the gun very far so its hard for him to get a purchase on it. He's cleaned and oiled the gun up pretty good but its still too stiff for him.

Does anyone know if:

a) there's an aftermarket company has sells an extender for it?
b) maybe a gunsmith could dicky up something?
c) it should be easy to pull back and just needs more cleaning?
d) buy a new gun?

Thank you.

A smith could smooth out the action and extend the charging handle.

You could also give the firearm a thorough cleaning and then apply plain white tooth paste (mild abrasive) to the bolt/carrier where it rides along the receiver and work the action 1000 times. Not firearm specific, keep the paste away from anything to do with head space. Clean it up and oil lightly.

Take the bolt out and have a good look at it. If it's got old oil/grease/goop on it give it a couple day soaking in solvent and clean it. Same with the action.Look then clean well.Re-oil both with a light oil and enjoy.

A friend got a replacement bolt for a cooey and it was terribly stiff even with oil. He cleaned the bolt carrier and he polished the inside of the bolt carrier and the bolt itself. oiled it up and it was slick as butter. He spent more time on the bolt carrier then the bolt. This was an old, old cooey too. If it is that slick old hands may find it easy to manipulate and he may not need some custom (expen$ive) parts made. A dremel and the right attachments and some polish paste is all he used.

Pretty sure the 6C is the same as a Cooey 64. There were custom charging handles available in the EE not too long ago. Perhaps the fella making them could make an o'er sized one.

The link isn't working for me. Probably because I don't have access to the EE yet.

Thanks for the excellent replies guys. This is exactly what I was hoping for. I'll take the gun apart and clean and polish it up myself and if that doesn't work, I'll try to find him an oversized charging handle.

here is how far the one for the 6c sticks out. Bought one for my Sears 6c

You will need EE access to view it.

Be cautious when lubrication the innards of the 64...it may make the bolt easier to charge by hand, but it'll make the rifle jam like crazy. Clean it thoroughly, but run it dry.

If it's really snug, be ceratin all the lock washers are in place on the screws that fasten trigger guard/ magazine well. If the go too deep, they can bind the bolt!

I still make the extended charging handles for Cooey/Savage model 64's and the Sears 6C. I have made some custom lengths for a few members. As Kamlooky pointed out the stub that fits into the bolt can be .248" or .310" in diameter depending on the vintage of the rifle, the older ones use the larger size. Here are some pics of some of the ones I have made. PM me if you would like one, I can make it in any style or length you want.

The first pic shows an original handle on the right.

I made this longer version for a member here as well. One like this will make it much easier to cycle the bolt, I have tried all the versions in my Cooey and they do not appear to affect the function of the semi auto bolt cycling.

This one is cold blued.

This thread is too perfect! My father in law came by last night with a 6c and had this exact issue. It hadn't been cleaned since new. I took it apart, cleaned it, oiled it, and it operates like new. Still missing the mag but, I ordered one from cabela's shoot have it back to mint next week.
