Bluing salts question

I am in the process of making a batch of bluing salt from lye and nitrate fertilizer but because of the new regulation on nitrate fertilizer I can only get 30-0-3 instead of the 33-0-0. Has anyone tried the 30-0-3 and will the sulfur make any difference to the final result? Or can anyone tell me where to get bluing salts in Canada?

Thanks
Glenn

Burn the sulfur by melting salt. Than cool it down and dissolve all in lots of distilled water. Crystallize salts back by evaporating water after you run all through few fine filters to remove impurities.

I don't believe sulfur easily dissolves in water , not like nitrogen anyway .

i'm thinking a guy might be able to dissolve the nitrogen into water and let the sulfur settle to the bottom , then pour the nitrogen mixture off the top .

I wasn't talking about dissolving it in the water but burning it by melting salt.
Sulfur will afloat the top of the water. Maybe another way to separate two so burning it won't be necessary step.

This is from another site and it works well as long as you are CAREFUL. There was a discussion as to whether Drano or Drain Out were the products needed. I agree with the prognosis, Drain Out is better.

Drano will work but has to be hotter and dipped longer.

MSDS for Drano shows the same stuff as Drain Out

others have said you don't have to wait for them to be disolved. once you have the salts up to temp, you are good to go.

You will wait for them to be consumed, guaranteed, and in fact you probably would not want to go near it while this is going on! :-D

The mix will react VIOLENTLY until the Aluminum is consumed, it will foam, splatter and boil over if the tank is not deep enough and I couldn't imagine anyone attempting to blue parts in the solution while all that is going on, however all this only lasts just a few minutes so it's really a moot point. As far as the Drano being the same I am not sure what the difference is but I know two who have tried Drano with very poor results, both times it came out a grey mottled mess with traces of a white residue sticking to the metal.

One more warning about the reaction, nothing seems to be happening at first and a person might think the reaction does not amount to much BUT, it will start after a short time and escalates rapidly when it does and at that point it can get exciting if someone is not prepared for it.

Why mess with draino etc, just go the the hardware store and buy the lye (sodium hydroxide), go the the garden store in the summer and load up on stump killer (potassium Nitrate), that's all you need.

Both controlled substances in Canada, meaning you got to have "permit".

Lye crystals controlled? Maybe in Ontario. Go to home hardware plumbing section and you can buy 5# jugs. Garden stores can only sell the stump killer in 1# containers, you are mistaken.

both are indeed controlled, BUT are available in different products.

as for Lye, when was the last time you bought some? in Sask I can no longer find it (was going to use it to slip off some deer hair)

Home hardware plumbing section last week, 5 piund jugs. If you know someone who works drillung rigs ask them to grab you a bag of caustic

If it's nitrogen you are looking for then be on the hunt for Granular Urea. 46-0-0 fertilizer. Lucky for me the place I work makes it and we are given a decent amout every spring as a bonus. If you only need a bit im sure we could figure something out.

Checked in some of the chemistry, might have to derive the granular urea into urea nitrate prior to making salts with it. Urea nitrate is made by mixing Gran Urea and equimolar amounts nitric acid in a chilled bath. Ammonia nitrate can be found in small amounts in instant cold first aid packs. I will have to attempt several hommade recipes for comparison once I get a few supplies together/days off.
