I am only loading for about 6 months now. So I'm fairly new. I've done tons of testing with my 308 and 8208 XBR has hands down served me the best. Results have been incredible. I love this stuff. Meters phenomenal which is awesome when your making 200 bullets. But the range results are even better.

Today I bought a 338lm savage 110 hs precision. Now I know most charts show other powders and I don't think any show the XBR.

Can someone explain to me why not all powders can work with all calibers? Like if I used the xbr what would be the problem?

much to fast for a big case and heavy bullet..

long story short you would have a huge pressure spike , with no where for that pressure to go... except outward.. and i dont mean down the barrel

take a look at some powder burn charts.. on the list of "fastest to slowest" xbr is #86.. things like h100 and retumbo (most commen 338lm powders) are 137/139

*WARNING DONT TAKE THIS PART AS ADVICE*
you in theory, can use any powder in any case. chances are when you get to a load that would be within safe pressure , the performance would be so poor that there would be no point.. using XBR in the 338 you would have better ballistics with a 9mm handgun. so you might has well just throw your bullets down range

Fair enough. Understood.

I use US869 and have used Retumbo and H1000 in the past. There is published data for a few faster powders but they can only be used with very light bullets (around 200gr). You will have the best results with heavier bullets in the 338, I use 300gr pretty much exclusively. I do have a 210gr load with Nosler bullets and H4831SC but I only developed that one because I was curious to see what would happen with some bullets and powder I had laying around with nothing to use it in. Best results with that combo was around 1 moa and my rifle is a pretty consistent 1/2 moa rifle with 300gr projectiles.

If you can't find data it's not an appropriate powder.
Even if you could figure out a safe to use powder charge for XBR you would not get the performance you could with other powders.

15gn of unique and some 250gn cast bullets could be a lot of fun! But also a giant waste of a 338lm rifle.....

Got 12 pounds of Retumbo for mine .
Love that stuff.
And don't forget , load that 338 with heavys if your barrel twist permit it.
