fireforming 303 British to 410 question

I wonder if trailboss would be a good powder for fireforming?

Absolutely not... Trailboss is well established as a powder one should never compress thus fire forming in any method aside from seating a bullet over a case 3/4 full of it would not be a wise move in my humble opinion... I will stick to blue/red dot or bullseye for cases that need large amounts of brass moved and a case full of media to do it.

Gentlemen

The above cases were loaded and fired today

CCI large pistol primer
30 grains by VOLUME FFg goex black
2x .125 cards
1/4" styrofoam wad
25 grain measure of #4 lead shot
.125 card
Roll crimped with a .308 seating die

Pattern was dismal at 25 yards but at 10-20 would be excellent for chickens
Minimal recoil and lots of smoke, an excellent novelty round for any reloader to play with.

Those cases filled out pretty well from the looks of things, I might give pyrodex or BP a try. Am I seeing a type-o on the shot charge? Or 25 grains by volume measure (same as measuring BP).

I used my BP volume measure set at 25 grains to measure out the shot charge, should be approx 3/8oz +\- but I had a little extra room so more would fit but I doubt a 1/2oz would fit.

I do similar to hotwheels 81 to form 40-60 maynard cases (pretty much the same thing) out of 303 shells. You must anneal these cases.

Except I use BP under cornmeal/rice/whatever I can find, and seal the neck with a scoop from a toilet bowl wax ring.

Excellent point on annealing

I grew lazy thanks to some excellent moonshine cherrys last night and decided against annealing these cases this morning before charging them, I loaded 5 rounds and shot for pattern, 1 case split near the mouth but the other 4 survived... I will be annealing the remaining cases before I try anything further such as 2 round balls over 5 grains of bullseye or 25 grains of FFFg and a full 1/2oz with a proper lubed wad... Melted styrofoam is not much fun to scrub from my little .410.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but I did not suggest compressing the powder, just using a full case of trail boss and some sort of wad to keep it in the case. why not do this rather than using filler? What does the filler do? I have been toying with the idea of making .410 for awhile now, just trying to soak up all the info. Thanks.

The filler only provides resistance to increase pressure in the chamber so the brass will form to the chamber walls, loose fillers such as cornmeal, oats, rice, cream of wheat and many many more are typically dumped in right on top of the powder charge with no separation or at most a card wad or some pillow stuffing... If you are going to attempt to fire form with trail boss I would suggest a short paraffin wax plug approx 1/4-3/8" in depth inserted into the case mouth after stretching it to at least .40cal and for trailboss I would run with a .45LC cowboy load data... And to that end I'm not sure how trailboss will react with so much extra room in the case?

I doubt however the pressure generated by moving the the mass of the plug will be great enough to form the case, the trick is you want to generate pressure and to do that you need resistance to the gasses trying to escape... It's quite hard to give you a reasonable opinion of the prospective outcome, if your familiar to loading and shooting muzzle loaders you will understand just how much of a bore seal and how much mass it takes to create a blank BOOM as opposed to a wet fart whoomph

Yep, good info, my Trail Boss supply is getting low, but I have a 4 pound jug of 700x, pretty close burn rate to bullseye, probably just get some cream of wheat and use that instead.
