Let's do some math. According to your statement

5.5 lbs for the ammo can
124 grain bullets
1000 bullets equals 124000 grains.
7000 grains in a pound.
17.7 lbs of just bullets.
Plus 5.5
23.2 pounds

That's only for a 1000 rounds of 9 mm. Not including brass, powder weight is negligible.

Now. Fill up a 50 cal can of loose 9mm rounds and let me know how much it holds.

2k at most. 60lbs packed to the tits.
 
Inside the Maximum tool boxes above are the MTM and RCBS boxes... mostly 50 count boxes labelled for gun and caliber.

My original estimate of 60 pounds was even less the the actual amount too.

I have ammo cans that are full of .22, but thats really the only ammo I store. I generally just load ammo for when I want to go shoot, I don't (yet, anyway) load ammo and then just store it. When I'm ready to go shooting and do load up a day's worth, I just put the rounds into soft zipper pouch and put that in the backpack I'm carrying. I have bullet boxes, but almost never use them I find them too cumbersome to tote around, they don't go into backpacks well. I don't load match grade ammo, so I don't mind if they mix and mingle a bit on the way to the shooting spot.

We don't stock them
 
I switched over to freezer bags years ago, especially for handgun ammo. They even have that white area on them for writing the reloading data.
 
I reuse factory boxes. Give a 50 count so easy to know how many built in a session, how many shot at match or range, how many stock on hand. I tear off the flaps on one end, tape other end closed - easily recognized as reloads and makes a nice sleeve for dumping 10 to 15 at a time into palm for filling mags. I also reuse the little primer sleeves - write date with unique ID # that matches to my log, bullet weight and charge. Tuck in box. Also gives easy record of primer brand.
