My wife has smaller hands and prefers a lighter gun like the s&w m&p 22 while im partial to Ruger 22/45

Others up for consideration

Ruger SR22
Ruger 22/45 lite
Browning 1911-22
Browning Buckmark URX
GSG
Any other reasonably priced .22s you can suggest?

Browning Buckmark the URX model has fiber sights great trigger and super grip for boys and girls.. and works out of the box plus very accurate

I did give the GSG a look but as a full size 1911 was not sure if she would go for it. She likes the ergos of a 1911 just not the weight & grip area.
With practice im sure she will get accustomed to the size and I guess the weight will be less also. Its just the Browning 1911-22 fits her 100% right just not me & M&P is a good compromise for us both.
The Browning Buckmark URX does look like A nice one also. Ill add both to the list & try and find shops with them to get some more hands on time for both of us.

I should add my first and only handgun was a S&W 622 back in 1996. Found one of those thinking how much i liked it but now it just dont feel right any more. Worked great just ugly and uncomfortable now...

If you're going to end up taking your shooting seriously don't compromise for either of you. If she's at all on the fence then a gun which only "sort of" fits her will likely end up not being that much fun for her to shoot. If the reduced size Browning 1911-22 fits her like a glove then suck it up and buy it for her. If you can't afford two guns right out of the gate then buy the Browning to keep her interested and just live with it until you can afford the gun you want. In the end the added cost will mean little as the years of shooting pass by.

If her hands are that small that they fit the "shrunken" Browning 1911 then she would likely also enjoy the Ruger Bearcat revolver for something different in rimfire shooting for later on.

I've got both the Mk III and 22/45. I find that the raked back grip angle of the Mk III works very nicely for the classic one handed stance with the body turned at roughly 45 degrees from being square to the shot. But it's not so natural an angle for a two handed square on isosceles triangle stance with the two handed high up and thumbs pointed forward style stance. For that the more vertical 1911'ish style angle rules for a reason.

Oh, if you shop around a little you might come across the 22/45 Lite version. Low weight for her with a 1911 grip for you.

I have had a LITANY of Smith and Wesson model 422 (and its stainless brother the 622) and they were (and are) the best shooting .22lr pistols I have ever had. JDC has one on his site. Caveat Emptor...........mags are like hens teeth to find

I would get a Sig p226 in 9mm, with the .22 conversion kit. Then you will already have two options when you're ready to move up.

Very good advice!!!
I hope to get out today and do some more hands on with the Browning 1911-22 & see if i can dig up a ruger 22/45 light for her to play with.

My local shop has a 422 and yes it was flawless no matter what ammo you ran, just not for us. Odd note my mag was stamped 10 rnds as usual but held 12 no problems.

So ill take the Sig off the list. We wont be burning 1000s of rounds but i dont want issues later either.

Vostok Margolin for the win! My ladies love it - light, accurate and wicked looking. If you can find one they're often a good price, perhaps $300 or $350 with a parts kit (recommended).

And for the extra cool (or nerd) factor, they were used as the basis for Princess Leia's blaster in Star Wars.
