I have been looking for a new deer rifle for the past few months and stumbled on a .270 Win Model 70 Extreme Weather for $850 and bought it. The rifle felt great, its the newer FN made rifle with 100% metal parts (zero plastic), nice B&C composite stock and an excellent fit and finish. I have heard of some M70's being rough with tool marks and poor craftsmanship but this rifle was the exact opposite.

So I get home, hit up CGN for some dies, brass and bullets and upon arrival reload about 100 rounds of Nolser 130 & 140 gr. Accubonds and a few 130 Hornady Interbonds. I load up the truck and head to the Dirt Hills Range after a brief stop at Prairie Gun traders where Darren sells me a nice Vortex Diamond Back HD for my .243. (Anyone looking for a nice budget scope they are excellent)...sorry bunny trail

So I get to the range get all my rifles pulled out and start the process of sighting the rifle in. After some minor tweeking Im good at 100 yards and start to shoot some groups. I started with the 140 gr. Accubonds and immediately shot just under 1" I shot 5 three shot groups all under 1 " and left it there, why mess with a good thing. Didnt get to the 130 gr. accubonds or Interbonds but am not overly concerned as this load will be a perfect hunting load. All my shots were off a bi-pod and not bags so I imagine I might even get them tighter.

I did have one mishap and that was the Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 mounted in the pic pooped. Something internally is rattling and rolling in it...Mailed it off today for a 14 week turn around and $30 shipping bill. I have owned countless scopes and have only had a problems with a Millet, a Hawke and now Zeiss. I always thought higher end stuff was tougher then most...well not for me. Oh well least I have a good shooting gun :D
So if anyone is on the fence about buying one Id buy it, they are great guns and believe this particular model is being discontinued.

I have the exact same rifle and calibre and have had the exact same results as you. I didn't know that they were discontinuing those rifles, though. That's disappointing to hear. I currently have one in. 338 that I'm having re chambered to. 358 Norma Mag.

If you can get one for $850-1000 range it's a solid gun and one of the most well built guns for the money imho. All of the finishings are high quality. I have Sako, Savage, Browning, and Remington to compare. Had the Extreme Weather M70 SS in 338 Win Mag but chose to go with Sako for my main hunting rifle. M70 would be a close second. Great rifle

Have any of you with a long action, standard chambering weighed your rifle? I am curious to know how much they actually weigh.

Thanks.

My brother has a modern M70 Featherweight in 30-06. He got it used at Epps for $599.00 with what turned out to be Leopold QD rings and bases. I told him if he didn't buy it, that I would.

He removed the satin finish and it now sports a beautiful oil finish. The action is butter smooth and the gun is very accurate. I'd recommend a modern M70 to anyone.

The M70 EW is a good rifle .. I almost bought one from Wholesale Spurts a while back (as I already owned an FM Win M70 Fwt ss/walnut).
Then I made the 'mistake' of comparing it side-by-side with a Kimber Montana (KMT)
I grudgingly found the Kimber to be better in every respect .. so I didn't buy the M70.
Later I read (on the 24HourCampfire website) about how the M70 EW in a relatively light Edge stock, still weighed ONE POUND more than a KMT.
Now I own THREE Kimbers. And no M70's.

Had one for 2 days. Yuck is all I can say. They look nice but that's it. Gross stock and fit and finish is to sloppy for me. Take sako or tikka any day over a winchester extreme weather.
