Looking for help with the Smith and Wesson m&p 45. It comes with or without thumb safeties. I saw one model in Dark Earth Brown, that model only comes with the thumb safeties. I really like it, but personally I am not a big fan of thumb safeties having Glock and Sig Sauer pistols Would it be legal and safe regarding the performance to remove them. I saw on youtube videos on how to remove them, but I am not sure it would affect the pistol's performance.

If you're familiar with the way the gun works, the safety can be removed - either by removing the safety, or by replacing the sear block with a non-safety sear block (tough to find for a 45). If you remove the safety you must (absolutely necessary) replace the plastic blocks that fill the holes where the safety is supposed to be. If you don't the polymer will tear at the cut out. It would be easier to get a black, non-safety gun and have the color changed by Armacoat, or someone similar.

I see it is not simple, I thought I could just remove the safety and that would be it. But would it be legal to do so, I tried to do a search on CGN forums but couldn't an answer.

i did just the opposite..installed a thumb safety on my 45 that came without.
ordered the parts direct from S&W (maybe 3 years ago now).
a simple procedure thanks to youtube.
just as simple to remove & perfectly ok to do so

You're lucky you got them because shortly after they quit sending parts to Canada to individuals. Good luck trying to get anything from them now.

Removing it wouldn't be illegal. If you were in the U.S. and used it for self defense, the prosecutor would probably paint you as a blood-thirsty zealot that removed the safety device so that you could increase the lethality of this already deadly handgun. Not a concern when you're only perforating paper.

Knowing it is legal is great but, about replacing the plastics blocks, that is something I did not think I would have to do, I though I could have left it like that after removing the safety.

maybe you can point us to where it states that removing a thumb safety is illegal in canada?
i dont recall ever reading that in any of the legislation.

personally i dont like the M&P's with the thumb safety on them.
my dad's 9 has it and ive run it a couple times, as a left handed shot its unusable at best and in the way at worst.
the safety-less variant on the other hand are perfect.

i like them.... a lot!

as you can see from the pic the 22 one has it on, but the 9, 40, 45 and 9 pro above dont.

Nice collection you have there, I guess you like the m&p series. I am a lefty so the thumb safeties are a bad idea.

Maybe you can show us, where he says it is illegal? He clearly says it wouldn't be illegal.
