The numbers of SKS owners in Canada

The reason why I was looking into this thread is to get the answer on that very same question. I just needed to estimate how secure is to posses the SKS giving the current trends, where without rewriting firearm act they slowly eat into the pool of non-restricted semiauto models by prohibiting some selected ones time to time. And this is no rumor. When the number of affected owners is comparably small, there won't be much of the hype. This time may be about 10000 owners were affected altogether (Swiss Arms and 858). And that went through just fine, right? Their tactics works. SKS owners number could be 50000 at most (I guess). So seems like a big chunk to bite, is it? I'm specifically looking into some customized SKS worth of $500-600, but I hesitate to invest into something which might have pretty good chances to be turned into paperweight or be delivered to RCMP for free.

Thanks for your inputs.

It wasn't ever full auto, so they can't be called converted auto and prohib'd for that. Like some cz858.

It isn't full auto, so they can't be prohib for that.

They aren't variants of named prohibited firearms, so not prohibit-able for that.

Why did you ever get your pal? I mean, maybe one day all gun ownership will be prohibited, if the law is change. Why waste the money on the pal fees???

Go buy a gun. You'll feel better than you do now worrying about not buying a gun.

Amazing.

I wonder how many enfields are in this country. :yingyang:

More Enfields than SKS in my locker....and I've got three of the little Russians. One to twiddle with, one to keep original and one for my soon to be born daughter when she hits 12 or so. I'll probably grab another soon for number two whenever he/she comes along.

As for potentially not buying one of the great bargain rifles of the day on the fear that they may one day be confiscated, f### that! More owners = harder to prohibit/confiscate. Why do you think we're still allowed AR's, albeit in restricted form? Sheer numbers saved them from the chopping block. In the week following the CZ and Swiss fiasco, I went out and picked up two more new off the shelf NR semi auto rifles just to say screw you to the bureaucrats. Everyone else should be doing the same IMO.

The only way we would have a somewhat accurate number is if the dealers posted how many they have posted, it would be cool if they did, but they might not want to for privacy reasons.

I already have a gun, so not in a big rush with SKS. I always try to research before buying something. That's why I'm here.

As it goes for the list of prohib reasons - don't you think it is just a RCMP's fake reasoning to cut down on the number of current NR. Once they exhaust those, they will make up something else. When so many SKS are in possession (as we're all rightfully throwing our guesses here in this thread), then chances are that some idiot eventually will go on spree using SKS or do some other #### - and here you go. Oh, and they already call SKS "assault rifle" originally made to kill people. It is military rifle, which was not designed neither for hunting, nor for sport - how that sounds, good reason?

So my Mosin Nagant is an assault rifle? It's military, not designed for hunting or sport. Your definition not mine!

Fearing a rifle may get prohibited is a good reason to buy one...especially a 200$ piece of awesomeness like the russian sks. Numerous people own ar lowers that they have not built into rifles but just because it is a cheap way to pizz off a liberal. The more people that have em the better. HMMMING and HAWWWING over a 200$ gun (that you admittedly want to buy), based soley on the antis cries for bans, is playing right into their hands. Its almost akin to throwing the rest of us under a bus which is why some replies will seem a little hostile. Many of us have been where you are...buy it, shoot the shlit out of it, if they ban it join the rest of the 49999 of us in fighting em.

Go read the firearms act, read up on the different classes of prohibitions, and read up on what makes a firearm prohibited. Then, go read up how firearms are classified, and then try to understand the history of how inspections used to be done (by documents) then how they are now (by physical inspections).

You wanted to study up. That's good. But study, don't buy into rumors, and fully understand what it is you speak of.

Then you'll find out why your worrying is excessive.

Go buy an SKS already. Or don't. Either way, don't fear what isn't about to happen any time soon.

Thank you all for reassuring me. If I would posses a stock $200 Sks, I would not worry too much as most of you here. However I like a top notch things (and it applies not just for guns). So as I said I would spend close to $600 if not more for all possible bells and whistles making it piece of art. This is what I did with my other guns where some of them worth few grands after upgrades. Hope you understand.

...sks?

$400 over the 200 you spend on the sks will do nothing to make it "a work of art", or add value. Do what you do, because you want to do it though. That goes for advice on modding the gun, and for purchasing it, regardless of what a future government may or may not do.

People would say spending 400 bucks to mod an sks is a bad investment. You are arguing that buying a 200 rifle might end up being a bad investment because the government might prohibit them, maybe.

Buy an sks because you want it, mod it because that is what you want from it.

It is very secure for you to buy and own knives. I think they will ban all firearms before they ban knives.

Russian SKS regular production was 49 to 56. WW2 was 39 to 45. Designed and tested in 45, but most are post WW2.

Easy way to tell the numbers.... Look at the import numbers via CBSA. Had to have permits to get them all here.

A small number of SKS rifles were tested on the front line in early 1945 against the Germans in World War II.

Most of those were destroyed in the testing process and were tortured, cut and modified to get to the shape and configuration we see today. Few survived. The ones that did are in a museum in Russia or in some rich billionaire's private collection never to see the light of day... at least to the likes of us anyway...

First , the RCMP have not gotten away with any prohibiting of the CZ or Swiss Arms rifles . They are not going to either . Next , " they " can call a SKS or my 10/22 an " assault rifle " if they so choose but there is not going to be any ban on semis . There must be millions of semis in this country and we , the owners , are now getting info faster then ever before . The response to the RCMPs power play was swift and overwhelming . Every time they try to pull any of this crap , the response will be a loud NO by the population of gun owners in this country . I , an many others refuse to accept being criminalized for owning a tool .
As someone mentioned earlier , even the Libs , when in power , knew that banning semis would be a fruitless endeavour . No one is coming for your semis .

After Moncton shooting the rumours are: all semi auto will be banned or at least restricted. This might turn very fast. That is when we will know for sure how many of those we have (or use to have) in Canada. Sorry for being pessimistic.

Not going to happen. It didn't happen after Mayerthrope, it didn't happen after that Montreal school shooting with the CX-4 and it won't happen now.

Well said. A voice of reason.
