Hello Everyone,

Sooooo I found what appears to be a very nice M1 Garand, issue is it is from a private seller in Manitoba... I am in Alberta. Is there any way that anyone knows of that I can buy this gun, have it shipped and arrived with me being able to check it and verify it is what he says it is BEFORE my payment goes through? It is a similar system (FRAUD ALERT) runs on certain things... where (FRAUD ALERT) is the middle man.

The sale takes place... My money goes to (FRAUD ALERT), (FRAUD ALERT) holds it for 30 days while the item ships. This way the item arrives and the purchaser has time to check and verify it BEFORE the seller runs off with the money and having sold a bunk item...

that way if something is wrong with the item I can contact (FRAUD ALERT), stop the payment and return the incorrect / fraudulent item...

However like I said this is only SOME (FRAUD ALERT) items I have seen that allow this and generally it is from eBay sellers who run a business not just a private sale...

I don't really want to hand over $1000 for a rifle and then either receive crap or receive nothing... Sadly I cannot just pack up my truck and drive my ass to Manitoba to look at a rifle...

Any ideas!?

Have the seller take as many photos from various angles to your suiting... Other than that, you will have to go verify in person or buy from a dealer that you trust

He sent a bunch of photos. It is listed as 1945 never refurbished and looks like it is in MINT condition... also that he has owned it for the last 15 years... but I can also say I am a millionaire from California and that I drive a lambo... doesn't make it true... I was just curious if there was a broker or anything on here... someone who runs a business that just sits in the middle. holds my money until I verify what was sent to me is legit. than he forwards the cash (obviously taking a small percentage).

If you are uncertain of the sellers authenticity. U can trace his ip address from his email. It can be narrowed down to city in a state or country. I found this out the hard way the $900 dollar hard way. Now i only deal with fellow gun nutters on here. And you could always ask the guy if he seems legit if you can have a few day non firing grace period to examine the rifle. Maybe half payment now half upon satisfaction.

The last seller I bought from off the EE took the specific pics and vids I asked him to. I bought based on that with his personal guarantee. He had a great trader rating so went with it and was not disappointed. I then added to his trader rating with praise. Make sure you talk about shipping ins. Ie: who pays.

Usriflecal30m1.com is a great site for all garand info. Type the S/N in there get a list of what parts and what drawing numbers should be present. Also check to see if that particular rifle is registerd on the site by someone other thrn your seller.

If you found the rifle through an ad, I would be careful, very careful.

If on the other hand you heard about the rifle through a friend, if the friend is close by, get him/her to verify the seller actually has said rifle.

Do not use (FRAUD ALERT) or EMT.

Get him to accept a bank money order and ship it so that he has to sign it.

When you include Canada Post into the equation, you open up a whole new list of charges, including using the mail system to commit fraud.

If he refuses to accept a money order, just forget about it.

First of all DO NOT USE (FRAUD ALERT) FOR FIREARMS! Doing so is in violation of their user agreement and your funds may be irrecoverably seized by them.

Unless warranted by the seller, items sold in private sales are sold "as is", and short of filing a fraud report against the seller, the buyer has no recourse. I would expect the seller to send quality, detailed photographs of the item in question before I commit to buying it sight unseen. If the seller refuses, and the risk is substantial, then I would pass on the deal. It may be $1000 Garand, but if the bore is pooched and the rest is wrecked, it is not worth it.

The people who own (FRAUD ALERT) and E-Bay are rabidly anti-firearm ownership and actively fund the groups who don't want you to be allowed to own any firearm. I believe using either for a firearms transaction is contrary to their terms of use. They have been known to confiscate funds and refuse to return said funds for such a transaction.
There ain't no 'Mint' condition M1 Rifles. Mint means unfired and exactly as it came out of the factory. Nor are there brokers who hold money for anybody. That's what banks do.
Sending a bank money order is just like sending cash. I think a CP money order gives you some protection though. Costs less to buy as well. Mind you, sometimes you have to trust the other guy. You could ask for some references and provide 'em.

(FRAUD ALERT) was just an example of the situation I was talking about guys. I never said I was using it to do a transaction. But thank you for the responses.

I would think that some firearms retailers would do something like I was saying where they play the middle man. Said seller brings his firearm into their location and says I would like to arrange a sale with (me for instance) have them verify the firearm is of the quality stated and send them the money. They ship it to me, take a cut and give the rest to said seller... I am kind of shocked if something like this doesn't exist...

The EE is a leap of faith, there are wins and losses. But it is all part of the game to get in on the lucrative private gun market.

Sunray, where do you dig up this stuff. Bank money orders carry insurance. Anything that goes through the mails and is involved in fraudulent activity carries very severe consequences when the recipient is caught. You don't screw with the banks or the Canada Post unless you are some sort of a fool.

As others have said, be *VERY* wary of anyone selling a Garand unless they have a known reputation. Garands are one of the most scammed rifles on other more public sites than CGN. If the price and condition look too good to be true, they very likely are.

The best way to protect yourself in an online deal is to verify the authenticity of the firearm and the seller. A lot of the scammers are happy to give you a call, but try to get their phone number. Check the area code and make sure it matches where they say they're from --- my experience is that this is normally not the case. Take some text that appears to be unique in the ad and enter it into good with quotes: e.g., "1945 Garand in awesome condition". Take the seller's photos and upload them into images.google.com to see if they get any hits. Lastly, ask the seller for a photo of the rifle with your name written on a piece of paper or a local newspaper.

What you're looking for re: payment is an escrow service, but I'm not aware of any nor have I ever found a need. Taking the above precautions and having and trusting my instincts when something doesn't feel right has made all my deals (hundreds) very positive.

I agree with the above. Further, I've found that the scammers often shy away from money orders in preference for EMT, which banks and police have shown little interest in trying to trace, so in that respect, there is more security with money orders.

One last bit of advice, *never* send a scan of your PAL unless you are absolutely certain the seller is legitimate, and even then, my preference is to call and read them out the number, expiry, etc. Scammers love collecting identities to use for their new venture.

If you have not been told yet, there are other gun boards in Canada that are heavily used by scammers. The typical scam is a rare gun in great condition being sold for half or less of the going rate. The buyer has to act fast to get the deal, and sends money by EMT, thats the only way the seller can get money for some reason or another, and thats it, there was no gun, and no way to get the money back.

You're in Edmonton, there will be Garands for sale there you can pick up locally, just take your time and wait for it. Go to the gun shows, talk to people at your gun club etc...
