What's a decent 1911 in 9mm ?

Blasphemy is a 1911 in 9mm.

And if John Browning wanted a full length guide rod in the 1911, he would have designed the 1911 with a full length guide rod. Yet, we all know the advantages. The 1911 began with John Browning, but just like the modern car began with Henry Ford, would you really still want to be driving around in a 1909 Model T. The original 1911 never had a 9mm, but then the original car, the Model T never had a 412 hp 5L Coyote V8. I don't think Ford would sell to many 2014 Mustang GT's with 177-cubic-inch (2.9 L) inline four-cylinder engines producing 20 hp for a top speed of 40–45 mph. Did any of that make sense? LOL.

Entry level / econo 1911 go with a SAM. [I like Norcs, but if doing it again I'd go SAM 1911 in 9mm over the Norc NP 29]

Something a little nicer, but costs more, go with a STI Spartan.

Thanks everyone. I have good stuff to go on now. Looking at the spartan based on all the solid recommendations.

I have a SAM and it goes bang every time. Well worth the $450 I paid. I also have an STI Tactical SS. It is a dream to shoot but was also upwards of 2k. Both great 9mm. Can't go wrong with either but their is a feature/build quality difference.

I have a Spartan 45 and it is great. I would buy another in a second...

I just got a Colt 1911 in 9mm. I haven't shot it yet but I'm sure it will be a winner as well.

The best reason to use factory mags.

stock mags are only 9 rounds (or maybe 10 rounders now, havent checked in a while), dont have removable base pads for competition, need extended base pads if you have a mag well, and I mangaed to break one of my practice ones after only 3 or so months of using it. It was my only one without an extended base pad installed (those ones have lasted years), so it seems the stock sport welds dont hold up very well to being dropped.

I've used Mecgar, Metalform, Colt 9mm mags without issue. 9mm isn't too finicky in a 1911, at least with the few I've had. On par with .45 for reliability, once you find a load and mags that work stick with it.
.40 can be a little ##### in 1911 platforms, mostly due to the bullet shape, but 9mm ball should run pretty well.

Yes, the stock STI 9mm mags are still only 9 rounds and they are much more expensive then Tripp 10 round mags. I don't like being disadvantaged so I use Tripp 10s only, best 1911 mags there is IMO. I also run flat nose ammo without issue.
