So Im wondering, what is everyones favorite brand of ammo thats commonly available at Walmart or Canadian Tire?

Specifically, I ask about .303 and .270, because they are the two calibers I am looking to get into right away, but I am also curious with the other calibers.

Three brands I can think of/picture in my head on the shelf is:

Federal in a blue box (Power Shock?)
Remington CoreLokt (Green/yellow box)
Winchester something-or-other. White box? I dunno...

Two particular aspects of these brands (and whatever other brands you find at the big-box stores that you like) interest me. The first is your general impression of the cartridge for hunting purposes - is it accurate enough? Are the bullets used decent enough?

The second aspect is the quality of the brass - which do you prefer (if any) for reloading? I figure after I've bought a few boxes of ammo, I will have a decent stock of cases to start reloading with, and my first box or two (at least) will just be used for target practice anyways, so even if the best hunting ammo isn't the best for reloading, its entirely likely I could buy both before shooting at anything with a heartbeat.

I've always had fair luck with blue box Federal. Haven't fooled around with Remington ammo overmuch and I've been a little disappointed with Winchester as of late.
One of our local CT's is stocking S&B and PRVI which I quite like, and the brass seems nice too.
Now, the biggest trouble with Walmart ammo is that you have to go to Walmart to get it. That store can kiss my &$$ most days....

Now I totally agree with that...... But they are the only ones open most Sundays, which happen to be a good day for me shooting-wise.

This also gives me a general idea of the more common brands even if I dont go to Walmart for it.

I've never seen ammo in a local Walmart here... that was the case for CT, but they've changed. I hope local Walmart's start selling ammo and create some competition.

If I need shells, or some cheap 30-30 I'll hit a 24Hr Walmart on my break from work. 1am ammo purchases are fun.

Yeah Walmart has been stocking 100 pack bulk #4 and #5 shot shells lately. So I buy those too since no one else consistently carries that.

The winchester boxes that go for just over $30?

So far all I have run through my shotgun is a case of federal #8 target loads. $64 from wanstalls, Canadian tire also had one for $70 that same day.

Are you hunting or just target practicing with the Wal-Mart stuff?

Yeah, like $33. They always just have #7 and #8 shot 100 packs, but I found a store that had #5, so I bought one. I also got a 100 pack of #4 Winchester at my local CT. Otherwise, always the 7 and 8 there too.

I use that ammo it for target. Mainly in my 590 and Hatsans. In my 870 I don't like the Winchester stuff. I run Federal and Challenger 7 and 8 shot with a full choke.

Any reason you are using 4s and 5s for target practice, and not 7s or 8s?

I looked the other day in Walmart, and I dont think the one I was in had anything lower #6.

Anyone have an opinion on the brass from the Remington, Federal, or Winchester ammos they sell at the big box stores?
