Hi,im new to these rifles and have just acquired a 1872 two band mk111.Did quite a bit of reading and found out quite a lot about the rifle.Although there is one thing i cant seem to figure out
DC
1HGA
279
These markings are on the left side of the stock,i found out that DC means dominion of canada and 279 is either regiment# or number of tropes in the regiment to which the rifle was issued.Would reall appreciate it if someone could help me out here

Thanks so much really appreciate the info will post some pics of the rifle when i get the time.Is this a common rifle or not something you see often

There seems to be a never ending supply here in Canada.

That said, condition, condition, condition.

Battalion and Garrison ownership all add up to the right collector.

I have seen a Halifax Garrison before, but I would not say they are common.

In Ontario the two most common are Ontario and Quebec Battalions.

I live in a small town swallowed up by Hamilton, Ontario.

Some of the hardest to find are 13th Battalion Hamilton and 77th Wentworth.

Quite the collection,do you shoot them.I collect ww1 and ww11 rifles this is my first snider.I came upon it quite by chance and didnt know anything about the rifle but have done quite a bit of reading and i find myself very interested in the rifle and the history. So now i have to shoot it

where is a source for ammo and reloading suplies,24 gage shot gun shells are not a common item. This seems to be the easiest way to reload for this rifle

24ga gauge plastic or brass hulls if brass you will need a set of .577 snider dies and a press that can take 1 1/4"-12 dies you will also need black powder I recommend goex 1f or if you have to o with the fake BP use pyrodex RS. bullets .585" to .600" pure lead round balls or .585" to .595" conical (there is two rifling twists 3 groove is 1 in 78" it will like round balls and short conical bullets the 5 groove has a 1 in 48" twist and will work well with longer conical bullets)

Not the easiest, just the cheapest. Ballistic Products out of De Winton, Alberta carries them usually, but not right now, I think. I got mine from Huntington's in the US. Lee dies from Rusty Wood Trading, a press that handles 1 1/4" - 12 thread, and you're about there.

any idea as to a ball park figure as to cost for dies and press ,will also need a bullet mold. From what i have read ..585 .590 seem to be the preferred bullet Dia.

dies are $125 a press something like the lee classic cast would be needed that's about $170 but a dealer may be more or less a custom .590" mold would be over $100 and it would depend on the snider you have and the twist rate some experimentation is needed with diameter but when you find the size needed CBE has the molds an can even custom cut them http://www.castbulletengineering.com.au/bullet-moulds/rifle/577-snider slug your bore and go take a look at http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/ they have a whole section dedicated to sniders
