sooo ... anyone know where i can get varget or what is equivalent to it?

IMR 3031 is good stuff, not sure how temp stable it is though. IMR 8208 is awesome, and not temp sensitive. Both of these burn a bit hotter than varget. FWIW, I won't use Varget anymore because it's so hard to come by.

I think powders are unique enough to say that I don't think there is a substitute...one powder to another. I don't load for .308 though, so someone else might be able to suggest an alternative. As for where to get Varget, if your local shop doesn't have it, find out when they will and start casting the net wider. I was after a certain Sierra Bullet a couple of months ago, ended-up finding them in Saskatchewan after about a week of searching/emailing/phoning Ontario shops. If you have a good relationship with your local shop(s), ask them if you can put your name on a list for when they get it in. Even if you've found some by then, buy a pound from your local shop too if you find a load that likes the stuff. It's been about 2 years since I could walk into my local shop, buy powder and .22LR off the shelf...so it's a "buy it when you see it" proposition. As sad as this sounds, both of my local shops have so many pre-orders that when powder shows-up...it never hits the shelf at all. The shops just start calling customers to tell them "it's in, and we won't hold it long for you!" lol Strange, but true.

so as the title says i need to find some varget to reload some 308... seeing as how its not on shelf anywhere does anyone know what i can use for a substitute?

the reloads will be for a

Have you tried higginson powders? I think cabelas had some in a short time ago as well. I use imr 4064 in my 308, varget in my 223. Look up your reloading data and start over with another powder that is available record the load data so you have multiple powders worked up when your favourite is not available.

I use IMR 4895, it works awesome in my Rem 700 with Hornady 168gr BTHPs. I got some amax's loaded up to try. I'm also getting good results with Accurate 2495 also.

You'll have to work up the load anyway, but IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy than either of the 4895's.
IMR4064 data is not interchangeable with Varget. Varget is slower burning, but not by much. 4064 starts with two more grains but they both end the same, except for pressures. Varget is a bit higher.

Life was pretty good for .308 shooters before Varget came on the market around 20 yrs ago and started being hyped as a "wonder powder" in the .308. Varget is a good powder and I use it in the .308, .30-06 and .303 Brit, but it isn't the best or only choice.

I did a lot of accuracy testing with match bullets in a heavy barrel .308 and really couldn't find too much difference among the following; IMR4895(as the saying goes, "if your rifle doesn't shoot well with IMR4895, then you've got a rifle problem"), IMR3031, IMR4064, H4895, BLC2, Varget and W748. The most accurate propellant for me in a couple of .308s has been WC755, a now discontinued Olin commercial grade ball powder. Both IMR4895 and IMR3031 were used in US 7.62mm match ammo and are always a good place to start.

Could the same be said for 223 ?
