Well, I just picked up my first single shot rifle yesterday. Got myself a Winchester 1885 125th anniversary edition. 45-70. Very excited to start loading ammo and shooting it. Thinking I may do some black powder loads too. Anyone on here a fan of these rifles, or other falling block designs? ( Browning B78, Ruger #1/3).

100 meter 3 shot group. What's not to love! LoL

I have a BPCR Browning 45-70 since they first came out.... awesome rifle, shot a lot of matches with it.
Also have a Shiloh Sharps in 45-120 so they both shoot the same cast boolits which makes it easy to load for both.

The 1885 has the others (it's contemporaries) covered in terms of design. Faster to load and shoot than the Sharps and slimmer. I love mine. Shot my first deer with it.

Good luck with yer new shooter - gonna be sweet. Always liked the no nonsense look of those 1885s - strong actions too. You should be able easily to convince a bear to lie down permanently with that.

The closest I come to a FB is my antique Rem 1867 RB in 50-70 - the cartridge I showed you last week at the local emporium when you were here. I like it - lotsa old time fun shooting it.

That's a beauty! The 50-70 is a beast of a round too. I have always been a fan of the RB action too. That 7mm for sale that I checked out last time I was there was pretty sweet too.

Does the Ruger No. 1 qualify for this thread? I've waited a long time to get one & (knock on wood) one is in the mail!
Had to make do with an old Martini-Henry 303 til now.
