Ruger 10/22 Shorty Build

Last year I purchased a brand new Ruger 10/22 RB from Al Flaherty's and I had a lot of trouble leaving it alone. I experimented with it over the past few months and after some cutting, a few part swaps, and a little paint it now looks like this:

The barrel is a Dlask 8" Bull Barrel with a Dlask XB-5 Linear Compensator on the end. The barrel was super easy to install but the compensator was a total pain to screw on. I scratched it during the installation process but a little sanding and some paint made it good as new.

The stock is the factory birch stock that I cut down to length. In order to fit the Dlask bull barrel, I sanded the barrel channel with a 1" dowel wrapped in sand paper. I also screwed in some sling swivel studs to mount my home made paracord sling to. The scope is a Tasco .22 3-9x32 Riflescope that my wife got me for Christmas.

The paint job was done using the sponge technique as demonstrated here. I used Krylon Camouflage Fusion paint in Olive Drab, Khaki, and Black. I finished the paint job off with a light dusting of olive drab to darken the stock and blend everything together. It was super simple to do and took less then 30 minutes.

I also put in a Power Custom Competition Hammer, a Power Custom Extended Bolt Release, and Kidd Extractor that is total crap and I can not get it to fit in properly (the factory extractor is now back in).

Over all I am extremely happy with my build so far. I have a short little gun that is very handy in the woods and much more accurate then the stock rifle due to the wonderful Dlask barrel and simple trigger upgrade. In the future I plan to get a new charging handle and some more trigger parts.

Agreed, MUCH lower rings. Get that scope right on top of the barrel. Then it'll look right.

A little bit of both. Before starting out, I knew I wanted a short gun for ease of carry in the woods while hunting but I also liked the look of a heavy barrel so I made some compromise on overall weight. Going with a short barrel and losing some velocity was not a huge issue as I really have no need for long range shots.

The paint job did not really serve any purpose but for me to experiment, although it does blend in well enough in the bush around here.

Overall I am pleased with both the look and the functionality of the rifle. I now have a nice little gun for plinking, hunting, and pest control around the farm.

i disagree about dropping the scope.
i think you should find the height where your eye can find the sweet spot on the scope fast and easy every time and get rings to match.
i started by putting all my optics as low as i could get them and ive since stopped doing that and now follow my brain.
a couple stayed low but i found about half needed med to high rings to get me in the right spot for the glass.

so my vote is go for usefulness over eye candy when it comes to optics height.

Helps direct the sound and concussion forwards, at least it seemed to help on mine.

Yeah pretty much. The rifle is very loud with the short barrel but the comp does reduce some sound for the shooter.
